Pirate Broadcasts?

Just curious - how's the new Pirates broadcast team working out since this is the first season in some 30 years that veteran play by play man, Lanny Frattare, isn't in the booth?

in my opinion, the new guy is very good. unfortunatly, john wehner is still part of the broadcasts. i don't get that one. maybe he's a great guy, but there are major delivery issues that are so annoying i can't listen to the broadcast. maybe it's just me. would love to hear other opinions. california

I think that for ex-jocks, Blass and Walk are just so polished that The Pride of Carrick High School pales by comparison. Not sure how much time and effort was spent training him for the biz. He does seem very knowledgeable about the game but rough around the edges. It all depends on your frame of reference (how soon they forget Pie Traynor!)

....how 'SOON' they forget Pie traynor?? Sheesh!! I'm over 50 and am too young to have ever heard one (lol)...

I'm 50 and the only thing I remember about Pie was some not-so-good live commercials (Who can? AMERI-can!!) during Studio Wrestling on Channel 11.

Pie actually did sportscasts on KQV in the Top 40 years. It was an awkward fit, but I think he lasted until about 1967.

This isn't a bad broadcast team really. Neverett runs somewhere between slightly above average to solid on any given night and Brown is a slight bit better. Trust me there are much worse broadcast teams in bigger markets who aren't nearly as good.

None of the guys here are Bob Prince or Mike Lange, but then again they aren't having to replace either of those legends.

Neverett brings a little more energy and pace than Lanny had over the last few years, and he clearly knows baseball (you'd think that would be a given, but the best example I can give to the contrary is Paul Olden, who was the original Tampa Bay radio voice. Great pipes, but often made glaring errors that revealed a lack of knowledge.... he's now the "interim" PA announcer at the new Yankee Stadium, as Bob Shepard will likely be granted the honor of it being "his" position until he passes.)

But back to Neverett, he's an upgrade in my book.

I notice that ESPN 1250 has decided to float a trial-balloon version of a Pirates post-game show during the current series with Cleveland. Since the Indians are having an even worse season than the Buccos, it makes you wonder what is going on. Setting the stage to make a run at getting the rights to Pirate baseball next time around? Can't imagine that would work on their 5KW AM signal. Could my favorite conspiracy theory about 106.7 being flipped to ABC/Disney be coming true?

Why not put ESPN on 106.7 in Pittsburgh? Keep radio Disney on 540. Although, I wish they could move ESPN to 540. If only that ownership problem could be taken care of. Lol
