Pirate on 101.5?

I was driving around on a Friday night, I noticed on 101.5 FM there is some Spanish station taking over. It's not the first time I heard this station, I've been hearing this since last year, and its been coming in strongly especially in the Hollywood area. Strange thing is that they're on the air on weekends, while weekdays KGB is heard. So is this a licensed station or a pirate?

I used to hear them intermittently on weekends when I last lived in Southern California (about a year ago)... it carried religious Spanish programming, often with poor audio quality, as if it was being taken directly from a sermon. I could not find anything to suggest it wasn't a pirate.

I lived in the Whittier area, where the signal was not very strong, and if I recall correctly, it peaked to the west on my directional beam.

WOW!!

That's an amazing DX catch! Must be some unbelievable skip going on. Did you try and identify them to send for a QSL? Were they in Madrid or Barcelona perhaps?

;D

I heard this station in Inglewood this past Sunday on my way to work. In the past, I heard KGB from San Diego. So what's going on here?

While I'm not sure the signal on 101.5 that I heard last spring was the same as the station currently being reported, I am fairly certain it was not a licensed station, and I'm positive it was not KORM-LP. KORM-LP was licensed in August 2009 per the FCC (http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/call_hist.pl?Facility_id=124781&Callsign=KORM-LP). Even if it was on the air at the time, I had major terrain obstructions toward Corona, which I doubt would allow the passage of a 100 watt station over KGB.

The description given here about this station was consistent with my observations, in that it operated intermittently on weekends, and originated in a westerly direction from my prior location in north Whittier. I have a brief recording from May of 2009, if anyone thinks they can recognize the preacher's voice, I'll be happy to send it along.

The station seems to be on the air tonight, very strong in the Hollywood area. It seems to be mixed with Spanish music and talk, which before it was a preacher speaking. The strange thing is, while the SD area stations were all listenable tonight, KGB wasn't booming in here as this unknown station took over the 101.5 frequency. I highly doubt it can be KORM-LP.
