pirate on 88.3 ?

So Im driving around north of Boston...Burlington area. There is 90s grunge rock overpowering WEVO. I compared it to the webcast of WGAO and thats not it. WRPS typically has regular IDs and PSAs and this station has neither. Its really too strong and constant to be either of them. On top of that its repeating the same songs roughly every 90 minutes without any talking or recorded drops. Its really difficult to listen to this much Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. :-[ :-[ :-[

Just tuned into 88.3 here in Stoneham, and indeed there is grunge playing, coming in fairly strong with some static. 'Dead and Bloated' by Stone Temple Pilots, followed by 'Sex Type Thing,' followed by 'Wicked Garden.' Apparently, they're playing the entire Core album in its entirety here. I do band scans each and every day, and this is the first time I've noticed this. There was a pirate on 102.9 in the last couple of weeks playing some Spanish format. Of course, the 87.7 is always present, and the 101.3 one as well. Geesh, what's it going to take for the FCC to crack down here? And if you're a pirate broadcaster, why would you air the same stuff you can hear a million times a day on WAAF, Rock 101, 94 HJY, the ghost of WBCN, etc.?

the only time the FCC does anything is when some big dollar broadcaster files a complaint, or they get a call from someone "up on the hill" that a constituent/contributor is having an issue.

Other than that is has to be an issue of public safety, like when the Brockton Pirate was screwing up the ground radio frequencies at Logan and planes were in danger.

Since the school year started a few weeks ago, perhaps someone has put WBMT, Boxford back on the air.

Or, perhaps WIQH, Concord is broadcasting over powered.

Or...

Perhaps it's some suburban kid in his parents basement playing what he thinks is cool...

A couple hours later, they're still playing the Core album by Stone Temple Pilots on repeat. I never knew until now there were 88.3's in Boxford and Concord, but I really think this is likely a pirate.

theres lots of 88.3's and 91.3s. its not unusual to hear an entire CD on WHRB or WMLN or WSHL

maybe its like 99.9 and everyone left @4:19 but forgot the CD player & transmitter are still on

from radio-locator:

WBMT 88.3 FM Boxford, MA Grade School (K-12)
WGAO 88.3 FM Franklin, MA Dean College College
WIQH 88.3 FM Concord, MA Concord-Carlisle High School Grade School (K-12)
WRPS 88.3 FM Rockland, MA Rockland Public Schools Grade School (K-12)

WCUW 91.3 FM Worcester, MA Variety
WDJM 91.3 FM Framingham, MA Framingham State College College
WSHL 91.3 FM Easton, MA Stonehill College College
WXPL 91.3 FM Fitchburg, MA Fitchburg State College College
+ WUNH, Durham, BelMuzique

This station hasnt been there before and there are no IDs at all so this is def a pirate.

Actually now illegal due to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (but I have yet to hear about any enforcement of it against any violators).

so right now in burington im getting a dead carrier (in stereo) on 88.3 which i imagine is this pirate. Its wrestling with a CBC/Radio Canada broadcast in mono. I checked NHPR schedule and they dont air CBC plus WEVO was in stereo yesterday. Im assuming this is some tropo.

There really isn't any tropo to speak of right now. Are you sure you didn't hear "BBC" and not "CBC?" NHPR is currently airing BBC programming. I can't hear 88.3, but 89.1 seems to be in mono, so I would think they all would be.

Last night, I managed to pick up a very small trace of WLIU from Long Island. I was only able to confirm it by checking the web stream. As I type this, there is nothing but static. Haven't heard the STP pirate in a few days.

it was def radio canada with stories about Newfoundland flooding and something going on in Alberta. Well anyway it was NHPR from Nashua. When I got out to the car later I heard an ID. The signal was crystal clear but no stereo indicator. Thats what threw me off because there is no question that they normally broadcast in stereo. That and the schedule on the NHPR not containing any mention of Radio Canada.

Yes the fairly recent 88.3 Nashua home of NHPR, which comes in around N. Reading a bit, too. Maybe that was the signal that was fighting with the pirate.

WLIU boomed in just south of boston this past Wednesday night night

Meanwhile in Miami, pirate station busted. Broadcast on freq between legit Christian station
and legit classical station. Actually arrested, not a warning

http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local-...stian-Radio-With-Hard-Core-Rap-104523104.html

Meanwhile speaking of Christian programming hijacked with shocking stuff, the record printing
plant that did the Christian radio show "Powerline" once accidentally issued it with copies of a Dead Kennedys album that had lyrics like "God told me to skin you alive..."

Rode around Burlington today, hear WIQH pretty clear through a good chunk of it.

So your "pirate" is most likely just WIQH.

In the areas where you don't hear WIQH, you hear WEVS. But there was no 88.3 pirate there.

The DMCA has nothing to do with over-the air radio broadcasting. It applies to digital networks such as the Internet.

Moreover, the DMCA doesn't directly impose restrictions on the content of Internet streams; it gives copyright holders some control over the use of sound recordings that are their intellectual property. However, it forces them to grant a "compulsory license" for the use of recordings under terms set by the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress, which has chosen to impose some content restrictions on stations that use the compulsory license. Not everyone does; stations are free to make other arrangements with copyright holders under terms that may be different from those of the compulsory license.

The bottom line is that you can't tell whether someone is violating a copyright holder's rights under the DMCA without knowing what licensing terms have been agreed to by the parties involved.
