Pirate on ....

91.9. There is a muslim mosque that broadcasts on 91.9..sometimes on 91.7, right around the channel 4 studio off Olentangy.

Also, I see that WINF "LP" is broadcasting over the alotted amount of power again. It has a screamin' 58 watts...

I've wondered about that myself. They seen to do very good with that screaming 58 watts in downtown Columbus. ;)

I've noticed that as well. Seems 101.9 hardly comes in here northwest of Marysville, but then sometimes it's loud and clear, like today.

Chad, As as one gets east of Campbell Hill you can pick it (winf) up! And it starts boomin around East Liberty! I mean that's a little unreal for 58 watts unless it's on a 2000ft tower!

That muslim pirate station gets out a good 3 miles. I can pick it up starting 161/315 intersection. I drove around and found it came in the strongest off of riverside st of olentangy near a mini mosque. Used a spectrometer to help me me out.

LMFAO! "A screamin' 58 watts"! Talk about a "Tower of Power". ;D

Wilson, where are you from? I've had 101.9 interfere on 102.1 WIMT a few times. WIMT's "service contour" comes in about 3 miles west of me. I'm just outside of Raymond. Seems like a damn good 58 watts if you ask me. Heck, it's just as far as 95.3 WKTN out of Kenton, which I believe is a little over 3k, and sometimes I have trouble getting that in. What do you think WINF's secret is?

I live in Columbus and have family back your way. Yeah, I noticed them overriding WIMT too, well within their 54dbu contour. I see they have a 4 bay antenna. That might help a bit, but I bet you they have an exciter that ranks up about 1000 or watts. WCRS and it more powerful translator dont get out this well.

Clear Channel dont care about their signals getting trounced. I called clear channel and they said they can't do anything about it. Very typical of Clear Channel. I'm not even sure why they have transmitters to be honest.

102.1 has a really bad antenna...it needs to be reworked, but with the tension there, it's probably going to be a little while....can't speak for 98.3, but considering the really bad engineering done on one, i can't address the other...

but I have had stations cover 30+ miles with exciter power, depending on the antenna an terrain..

I will say that WINF is processed well, and that makes a difference

At first I thought you were talking about WIMT Lima. They only have a 2 bay antenna, but it's on top of the WATCH TV tower just outside Cridersville, which is 1072 feet above ground level. I've gotten it as far away as Circleville, Dundee, Michigan and Greenfield, Indiana when I head out west. Seems odd that a 58 watter can kill a 50k equivalent (after height+power is figured in.)

Which brings me to my next point. How come WIMT will announce at the top of the hour.... "With 50,000 watts of broadcast power... this is T-102...", even though they're only 11,000 watts? I know that the height probably makes them equivalent, but anyone who hops on Wikipedia or whatever will see that it says 11,000 watts, and think WIMT is full of liars. What do ya think?

The 50,000 watt claim is probably their ERP (Effective Radiated Power) that is calculated using transmitter power and antenna gain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effective_radiated_power

KNows better, you have a point, but I can say for a fact, WINF is over the pwer limit or their antenna system is amplifying the signal(also not legal). These guys are going to be asking for an FCC visit very soon:)

There is no way they are broadcasting with just 59 Watts ERP because they are being heard all
the way to Downtown Columbus and beyond that on just a portable radio. Nevertheless, they
are providing a public service now so maybe the FCC will leave them alone unless someone complains.

Automated Easy Listening music with PSA's and Recorded Weather updates? How is that any more Public Service than what Clear Channel does on 93.3 WLZT (At least WLZT has live on air talent in some day parts)

I don't have the ablity to measure their speciifcs.. but I also think one of the reasons they get out well is because of their location they do not have much in the way of 1st or 2nd adj interference.

The nearest station to them is 101.7 Newark and 102.5 Baltimore (102.1 doesnt count as its not on 24/7 and really only reaches the NE parts of Columbus with a listenable signal)... So they have a pretty clear spot on their dial. Kinda like I can hear Lancaster's 90.9 WFCO in my Car in the north parts of Columbus a lot of times fairly well because their nearest adjs are 90.5 and 91.5.

That dose explain why I can hear them with almost full quieting on a Koss portable radio in German Vllage, south of downtown. They shouldn't be heard this strong
in any part of Franklin County.

FCC license data says they are licensed for 59 Watts Effective Radiated Power(E.R.P.)and 33 watts of Transmitter Output power. There antenna is about 100 feet above ground. How much E.R.P. do you think they are running?

FCC license info on WINF-LP:

http://cdbs.recnet.net:8080/fmq.php?facid=132375

When I lived there a few years ago, I listened to WINF-LP clearly on a car radio driving down Rt. 104 in northern Pickaway County.

For anyone who remembers when 107.9 used the same tower WINF-LP is using, their signal with 6 KW ERP didn't cover much more area than the supposed 59 watt signal of WINF-LP.

I have never heard of any LP station using a 4 bay antenna, except for WINF-LP. That alone is suspect.

How does one report this to the FCC?
Written complaints alleging violations of Section 301 of the Communications Act should be sent to the Federal Communications Commission, Enforcement Bureau, Spectrum Enforcement Division, 445 12th Street, SW, Washington, DC 20554.
Complaints should include the name of the operator, if known, how the station identifies itself, the location of the station, the operating frequency, and whether the station's operation is causing interference.

You can also call the FCC at 888-CALL-FCC
