Pirate Radio 930 is on the air, sort of...

Just tuned in to 930 to hear Clark Howard, that's apparently a no-go anymore, as well as the 6a-9a replay of Rush. 930 is now Pirate Radio 930, doing the same stunting that 1250 did 2 years ago when they changed.

Rush and Gallagher are staying, which is great, I like both... but everything else is a simulcast of 1250. I never thought I'd say this, but I guess we did have a good thing in News/Talk 930 and now it's gone. Yes, I'm glad it's back to local ownership, but local ownership could do a lot more than simulcast two blowtorches 18 hours a day.

Schedule: http://www.pirateradio930.com/site_htm/programming.htm

When you factor in the 6 hours/day that they are not simulcasting, Arbitron has just entered holy hell...
______________

Just what this market needs. Another station with its lips firmly glued to Petey The Pirate's backside.

And WECU 1570 isn't even on the air yet.

Just curious, what's so bad about that? The marketing behind Pirate Radio is pure genius; I can't tell you how many students I see wearing shirts with the logo, how many ads are in magazines found around campus, etc. It wouldn't suprise me if out-of-area people think it's some part of the university.
______________

There's a fine line between marketing and overkill.

To the target audience it's not overkill.
______________

I'm not even an ECU alum, and I'm very impressed by what they've done. When the announcement was made that WGBH was going to re-launch as a talk/sports station, in a town that has a talk/sports station, I thought it was suicidal.

They have buzz. Something WNCT-AM does not, and will not ever have in its current structure.

As long as they're making money, and serving the community, but mostly making $$$, that's all that counts.
______________

I know it's almost blasphemy to say this around Greenville, but there are a significant number of folks who are already tired of getting ECU blasted in their faces every time they turn on a TV or radio or open a newspaper. For people who have no connection to the university, it can get a bit tiresome after a while.
That's where the overkill comes in.

If ECU pushed the academic side of things as much as they push the athletic marketing, it would be the MIT of the South.

But you have to admit that the school IS Greenville, and without it this place probably wouldn't be much bigger than Ayden or Farmville. I see nothing wrong with the citizens taking pride in that... ENC as a whole needs everything it can get to take pride in.
______________

Ever been to Columbus OH? It's all about Ohio State, who's enrollment on the main campus exceeds 50,000, a small city.
______________

AMEN! That is why I read the N&O. Daily Reflector sports page should be called the daily pirate. Same for all the sports reports on tv. They think everyone in the east likes ECU and Nascar. I have no problem with ECU but want to know what happens with the ACC and I don't like NASCAR.

Ever heard the phrase, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"?

You are the exception in this part of the state... sure, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you have to understand that media outlets are going to program to the greatest interest.
______________

I am not saying don't report on ECU but I am saying report on other teams too. Read the N&O they talk about ECU but also State and UNC and Duke and Wake and every other school of interest. Watch WRAL news they talk about all of them too. Watch the big 3 in the east and they talk about ECU and Nascar and unless State is playing Carolina they hardly cover it. I have all the respect in the world for ECU and have many friends there and I do occasionally go to there games. And yes they are a big part of Greenville but when it comes to Eastern NC I would almost bet there are as many State and Carolina grads in the east as there are ECU Grads.
