Pirate Radio Check

Any Pirate Station running in the Houston area???

So any pirates

It seems that for whatever reason Pirate Activity in Texas doesn't really seem all that high.
Although Texas does have its fair share of Part 15 operations.

That's unless you're talking about Austin, where pirates are alive and well. It's been that way for quite a while.

The most memorable pirates I've heard in Houston were from the late 90's; one of them played uncensored rap (on 88.3, if I recall correctly) with an irregular schedule and the other was Radio Montrose on 94.9. Now that was an interesting operation, 24 hours for a while supposedly with around 35 watts and often it actually sounded pretty professional. Here's a link to a story detailing their shut-down in 1999: www.houstonpress.com/1999-05-13/news/silence-on-the-dial

Fair share indeed. Drive around town and scan the dial. You will find stations you never knew about in this city. KBTL 92.5 is the most famous one located off of Wilcrest and Memorial. There's a great 80's station at 94.9 that services 4 city blocks in Houston. Only station in town still playing Technotronic, JJ Fad and the Stereo MC's. If you can find it, I'll play you a request and buy you a beer.

Houston is the 4th largest city & We have not had any really well known pirates weird every city that has more than 1 million people has atleast 2 pirates with decent range running running all the time just seems a little weird to me

Well the airwaves here are so full with all the locals and the rim-shots from Bay City and Beaumont originally. But Montrose Radio and others like it is why the LPFM and Part 15 rules exist. If you want to be broadcaster do it legally within those rules.

I have a Pirate Ship that I sail around in the bay looking for treasure near Houston. Does that count?

A few in Beaumont, mostly on 96.7 and 105.3 frequencies because of all the interference elsewhere.

Don't know if Houston still has an FCC office here, but when they did years ago they were ruthless. No warning just raids. That's what happened with Energy 99.9 and Radio Montrose. This is different from Austin or say, the entire state of Florida. :) To answer your question, there's a "Power 94" on 94.1 that is playing what a CHR/Rhythmic was playing in the late '80s - early '90s in Katy. Just a quick "Power 94" ID in between songs every once in a while. It's the same guys as active rock "96X" that was in Katy on 96.1 in the summer of 2005. They aren't too big on specifying the frequency in the monikers, so no ".1".

I understand that many of Houston's pirate stations will be carrying new programming in the Morning. A syndicated show called Chucker & The Colonel!

It's a multi-station effort. I glad you relented about having top billing. It all starts Monday!

I am planning to carry the Colonel and Chucker on my pirate station, but I'll have to bump old reruns of Bill Drake's History of Rock and Roll series that has been running non stop now for nearly three months. ;D
