Pirate Radio in Central PA

Hey all, I was curious if anyone has happen to stumble across any pirate activity in central pa lately. I frequently scan the bands in hopes to hear that little multipath infested, crapily processed signal, but i have had no luck. I ask because i am an avid foxhunter, and their is nothing like tracking down an FM or AM pirate! A group of guys and I use a technique called Doppler direction finding with special equipment, as well as yagi's and the triangulation method. If anyone on this forum has heard of any, or would even like to join me in a foxhunt, please contact me on here. thanks

Over the years there was an occasional pirate radio running in the southern half of Lancaster City, often centered around the block of South Queen Street where the discount grocery store is. (200-300 block south?) The station ran hispanic, mostly religious programming. I believe the Philly office of the FCC even tried to catch him but he did not broadcast enough of a regular schedule for them to catch him in the act and locate the exact transmitting point. Maybe 20-25 years ago the FCC did shut one down in that same area. The guy fought it for some time with an Ohio attorney who specialized in those cases. Not heard of anything recently.

A couple of years ago a ham operator hooked up a small FM transmitter to an internet signal so he could listen to a out of state radio station while cutting his grass and working in his yard. The FCC found that quickly and shut it down.

Darn!

And here I thought you were talking about the baseball team having an affiliate in Central PA!!

:(
Wouldn't that be great! Raising the Jolly Roger today since McCutcheon was signed for 6 years! I know, you probably aren't a Bucco fan but from living out there for many years and always expecting a losing season was tough, especially when the Steelers and Pens were doing well.

I don't expect too many stations would jump on a KDKA-FM Pirates broadcast around here.

I think the novelty of a real 'pirate' station has really worn off in the past 10 years, its easier to put a station on the Internet. About 10 years ago, there was a Spanish pirate in Reading on 1630 that was in town but it went away after a year or so. If a pirate does show up now, its likely to show up on FM. There are some very nice AM transmitters available, such as the Rangemaster or Chex Radio units and Radio Systems has a very nice modified Talking House transmitter. They fall under the Part 15 rules and do work nicely if set up properly (2-3 mile range).
