Pirate Radio in Gretna or Is It A LPFM???

Saw a vehicle when coming back into Gretna last week with a sticker on the side saying "Radio Hope 107.9" and also saw over on Stumph, I believe it was...either that or corner of Lafayette Street at the expressway..."Radio Hope For Gretna..107.9"

They are religious with some talk and mostly Contemporary Christian Music and Praise & Worship. The guy at 12noon today said his name was Lenny and gave the call letters K5SXAE "Radio Hope For Greater New Orleans Emergency Broadcast".

I dont think broadcasting Christian Music and talk qualifies as "Emergency Broadcast" does it? I would think information like WWL-AM would qualify as "Emergency Broadcast".

It sounds like a CD playing because there is dead space between the tracks/songs. The announcer did say that they are scheduled to be streaming on the internet starting this weekend. I was listening for a website address but he didn't give one.

Did a search on the FCC's site for LPFM and didn't come up with anything for Gretna.

Needless to say this is interesting.

This may be interesting, too!!!

Quite a few years back, there was a pirate radio station in a subdivison in Harvey, LA. This young guy and his friends were running this station at a house or something. Where they got a hold of an FM transmitter, I'll never know??

They gave a phone number for requests one time. I called and asked, and the guy said he had a tower in his backyard at max height for the area (30ft), a small whip antenna atop of it, and a small transmitter.

I first time I heard the station, they were broadcasting one night on 96.7FM and i got interested in finding out where the heck it was coming from. It was a weak signal when I picked it up driving on Manhattan Blvd. near Gretna Blvd. I was heading south. As I drove closer to Lapalco Blvd., it got stronger, then eventually was strong enough for stereo reception. I then proceeded to find out where it was coming from, then a DJ came on and said they were "Buzz 96" or something like that, "The Voice of Woodland West and Spanish Oaks."

When I found it that night, I would check the frequency from time to time just to see if they'd be on. I don't think anyone ever knew they existed. They played music like a college radio station. Every conceivable format possible... from a death metal show with some weirdo kid, to an oldies show with some older girl.... They goofed off so often on that little station, but I never found out exactly who was behind the shindig.

Just a thought....

LPFM's are assigned 4 letter callsigns with -LP behind them (such as WZEN-LP)
translators are assigned a letter three numbers then 2 letters (such as K249DI)

The only callsigns assigned anyway close to that that I'm aware of is Amateur "Ham" Radio and experimental licenses.... and it's the wrong format for the amateur license (who can't use the X suffix due to it's use for other licenses that I am personally aware of.... The experimental uses a X after the number BUT lately FCC issued licenses are WC2 calls NOT KS5...... and a radio broadcast on a active radio band is not experimental in anyway I can see)

But I did find the correct callsign of KS5XAE as given in a Glenn Hauser article

Their website has too many questions for me however:
http://www.friendships.org/hurricane_katrina.html

Why do we need a 250 watt station broadcasting religious programming and information? Most of the NOLA stations are back on including the praise and worship stations... coming from a ship docked in Gretna no less..... read the website for more info...

I have not been able to find anything about this supposed new license.. Not from recnet, FCC,ham radio sites (as the callsign has a ham radio style format and the group that got them their "license" uses ham radio to spread their message or anything from a trusted source (other than Glenn Hauser who is just relaying what people tell him) on google.

The FCC leaves a paper trail for callsigns but I can't find a record one of this one..espcially one that is 2 1/2 times the legal limit for LPFM.

I hope some one can shead some official light on this one cause most of my searches come up fruitless.

(Including my scan of 107.9..which gives me KRKA from Lafayette bringing down the krunk:)

Thanks but found that on the hit I did on google also. As you can tell, it a blog..someone's opinion. Not a website that is offcially with the US government (such as FCC.gov) or one who downloads the files from the FCC (such as recnet,radio-locator).

Usually for something like this, it would be a pat on the back for the FCC for a job well done like they did for the low-power station that never came to be at the Astrodome in Houston .It would be all over the FCC site, a few news sites, or be in more places than websites connected either by people or suppliers to the people running it (other than Glenn Hauser who reports radio in general).

Also Why would the FCC ok a radio station at 250 watts in New Orleans when 1/2 of the licensed stations were on and broadcasting? If it was so devestated that nothing was left I'd say yeah ok... But with Most stations being idle only because of fuel concerns (no power) that isn't worth a STA license for something that could get time on another religious broadcaster in town IMHO ..Sorry....

..Oh and I see you love firefox also :)

Yeah...something's fishy in the water there, I'm afraid

You betcha! Am looking forward to when it's as accepted as MSIE and Nav for webpage design. Until then, I'll keep my handy "view as IE page" plug-in handy.

As I said, Never say never, but most of the experimenter licenses issued are having twos in them right now such as WA2XMN which was an experimental license issued by the FCC to honor to the first beginnings of FM radio (on the FM orignial band of 42 MHZ, hince the license) After digging was found on the OET portion of the FCC site.. A look of the other callsign (Gretna station) showed nothing (and an experimental license is only issued for emerging technology and must not interfere with current users of the band..If someone could direct me to a site on the FCC site that shows me that license, I'd say differently...

That and wouldn't a 107.9 signal possibly interfere in Dowdy's protected coverage area for "Kicker 108"?
