Pirate Radio report 06/15/12

I have a follow-up:
Yesterday, I was in NB and decided to drive towards Main St. via Kensington Ave/Arch St. as a one time pirate was in theat area on 87.9. Nope, not a return of them, but here's the thing, as I past the spot they used to broadcast from, I started getting the signal, as I drove north, it got better. At no time was it ever perfect, it would fade in and out constantly, from a 3 to a perfect 10 in strength, but as soon as it hit one extreme, it would change to the other. I had a harder time getting an ID on these guys than I do with e-skip, and I do quite well with that. Adding to the problem was the station was getting it's audio feed from a stream that kept buffering or was just recorded that way. Eventually, I thought I heard an ID mentioning being on 98.3 and the typical "Radio Avivamiento" ID as if I were in Meriden. I didn't know if there was a new translator up and running so I tried doing yet another search using the new info and I found this: http://maximizedlivingct.com/main.php?page=view&id=19
Take note in the right column, the website lists it's shows as airing on WSGG in Meriden on the expected 98.3, but above that is lists 100.1 WSGG in Hartford-Manchester, and a quick look at the Manchester listings on Radio-Locator revealed that it is indeed a translator licensed to Talcottville as W208BK under a construction permit (is this a move from 89.5? that radio show site doesn't mention 89.5). I did a head-slap (D'OH!) as I'd done this search using at first using Hartford in normal reception range and then doing a state search, it never came up, had I opened up under Hartford to distant stations, it would have come up! (Apparently the state search does not reveal translators!)
I'm going to have to listen to the original 98.3 and see if the programming is just as sloppy and chopped up like a buffering internet feed, another thing I noticed was not only did it cut out constantly, it also would toss in random ID's and either commercials or underwriting at random.
Sorry for the false pirate report, but to make it up to all, I did notice that both energy 101.7 and Busy Radio 103.3 were on and off at random points this week, I thought they both had near-full time schedules, could there be something going on? Maybe a few more visits from Uncle Charlie?

Well, the 104.5 Spanish pirate's dead carrier transmitter is still going in the New Haven area... (Sunday, 6/17/12 @ 12pm) so your pirate report is a little different than you originally intended... but a pirate report it is, nonetheless! 
BTW, this pirate is running significant power, as I can hear it all the way up I-91 to about exit 9 or 10. Their signal in West Haven is also quite clear.

Just came back from Meriden, and 98.3 sounds like (as homer simpson would say) BULL PLOP~
Someone must think they are on AM and that they can get out farther by running very high levels of modulation. The audio is distorted so badly, that it's harder to make out than it's manchester cousin. Are they looking for a tech? I'm available for part-time work, I'll get those levels right.
Also, as soon as I got into the car this morning, I noticed WGBH was in nice and clear instead of the spanish god-caster (also guilty of sub-par audio), and it stayed with me until I got almost to North Haven, just like the old days before they got on the ar.

It was actually a really good and informative program on the options available to a homeowner facing foreclosure... until he got to the part where he said these are the things you have to do because the "white man" doesn't want you to own a home.
Energy has a pretty heavy spot load, and it's not just for clubs and concerts... I've heard a State Farm Insurance co-op spot with the State Farm jingle tagged for a State Farm agent located somewhere in the North End.

That would be a translator. It is the translator that used to be on 89.7and 89.5, it originates from the Comcast tower on the Bolton/Vernon line east of Manchester. They are finally licensed to the facilities they've been using since they were on 89.5.
Their primary station is licensed to Norfolk but is physically located in North Canaan. I've yet to ever actually hear it on the air since it moved. I did hear it once when it was on the roof of a barn in Norfolk a long time ago. (Yet the translator remained on.)

However with that said, 89.5/89.7 was kind of acting like a pirate anyways. They were licensed to operate directionally with a Shively single bay directional antenna (A 6810 1 bay), however they were operating vertical only, using a non directional antenna. They did this on the two other frequencies. The license for 100.1 is accurate to the install they had been using before.
But these guys still don't play by the rules. I take multiple trips through Connecticut , which takes me right through the center of the village of Canaan, North Canaan, where the primary for the translator, WSGG, sits. I have NEVER heard it on the air, except for one time, at their old location, two years ago. And every time I drive through, when I get into Hartford, I hear the translator on the air, blasting away. This directly violates FCC 74.1263(b)

I believe the FCC shut them down a couple years ago... not sure if this is the same people or not, but the signal is rather strong.
