Pirate Radio Report 5/12/12

I picked up the following pirates while driving on South Street/Mountain Road in Bristol: (Radio = Stock Radio in 1995 Pontiac Sunfire)

Energy Radio - Now on 101.7 instead of 101.5

103.3 - Reggae Pirate - DJ was riding the pot up and down talking over the music. I never understood why Reggae DJs do that. When 1190 WLIB in NYC used to play Reggae Music some of the DJs used to do that as did the DJs at the now-defunct Blaze 990 during the all-day Saturday Reggae block.

Coming home spinning the AM dial as I was driving on Chuch Street in Bristol I picked up a Spanish pirate on 1620.

Busy 103.3 has been pretty consistent over the years, and it's a pretty decent signal. I carry it on the surface streets through downtown Hartford and out on I-84 into East Hartford.

I noticed Energy on 101.7 for the first time yesterday (Friday) also a decent signal in downtown Hartford.

The Spanish pirate is back in New Haven. Some days, there are hours and hours of dead carrier. The signal is quite strong.

That 103.3 is on the North End of Main St in Hartford.
101.7 is actually the former 87.7 pirate which was at one time, 101.5
They are simulcasting on 101.5 in Springfield again. (At least they were the other night.)

What frequency is that New Haven Pirate on ?

They are at 104.5, which is just 2 channels below my employer!

I can hear them quite clearly all the way out to exit 8 on I-91. They start to fade between exits 8 and 9 on my crummy car radio. They also come in quite well where I live in West Haven. That's no flea-power transmitter they're using.

Curious... is the Boston FCC office still in operation? This pirate ought to be an EASY catch, since they're on the air every time I check. (Either with dead air or programming.)

Really? Main Street in Hartford? Shoot. They must be pumping out a lot of juice then. Both 103.3 and 101.7 were coming in crystal clear as I was turning into (and eventually parking at) the Stop & Shop Plaza on Pine Street in Bristol last night around 7PMish. Both are running commercials too.

Yet the Brockton pirates which are maybe 20 miles away continue to operate, one jamming a licensed station! (89.3/WUMD).

If you're ever on the NJ Turnpike in the Newark area you'll find a pirate on almost every open frequency. It's crazy.
Same thing in Brooklyn and the Bronx on the weekends. There's no such thing as an open frequency as even the first adjacents to full power stations are full of pirate stations.
