Pirate Radio Station in Katy

Any Katyites notice a pirate on 91.3 MHz recently? I'm trying to listen to KPVU in the car and it doesn't clear up until I am in Cypress. All I hear while I am in the Katy area was a low bandwidth stream of music at first and now better sound quality within the last week. It is isolated to the Katy area since I was able to pick it up also in Tomball, The Woodlands, and points north.

(Is K217DP back on the air? It sounds like a Part 15 FM transmitter for a personal music device with a large coverage area more than a translator station.)

Good luck getting the FCC to shut it down, There is still a station going on in Lockhart on 97.1 that I complained to, all I got was a letter meaning nothing.

What type of music was playing?

I'm in Katy and I'll let you guys know what I hear, but it's KPVU right now. Katy's been home to a few pirates in recent years; reggae on 87.9 and 89.7, hip hop on 90.5, 90s on 94.1, active rock on 96.1 and now this one it seems. Not a good frequency choice at 91.3 but neither have many of the past Katy pirates (or P-15's in this case).

Part-15 and pirate are interchangeable on FM. If it gets out more than a couple hundred feet, it's juiced.

There's a 24 Hour Fitness at Greenbriar & Holcome that blasts TV audio (usually ESPN) on 91.7 that blocks KTRU both inside the club and as you sit across the street at the traffic light. Hint: if you're going to juice up a part-15 transmitter to overpower a non-comm on that frequency, don't do it down the street from that station's studios.

Sounds like South Asian music. I once also heard some Spanish (evangelical?) stuff. The audio quality is low like a 32 kbps stream. They may be playing stuff from an iPod because I have yet to hear a live or taped person.

If this is a "Part 15", then it is definitely juiced. The signal is the strongest around the old K217DP site. It seems to be following the pattern since it fights with KPVU as you go further north on Barker-Cypress (towards Cypress) and seems to be clear of interference at FM 529. How would one report this to the FCC? I would like to get the daytime NPR shows that KUHF carries on HD-2 with my analog radios.

Speaking of Lockhart, are you familiar with the 99.9 and 104.7 pirate stations? I drive through Lockhart from time to time, but never long enough to get a station ID. They do not show up on radio-locator.

If the 99.9 your talking about simalcasting KNCT, is DK260AB By the FCC GILBERT GARCIA owns it Service area: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FX182464.html , its about 5 miles north of Lockhart, 104.7 was over by Mendoza which had the KHCB network on, but I don't know what happened to them. It has been off for sometime now.

There is a 106.1 pirate up in Cypress, too. Been there for at least a year. You'd think they'd have gone with another frequency considering KTTX comes into Cypress fairly well in the right conditions. IIRC, there was a 96.1 pirate in Acres Homes a few years back that actually made the news on a couple of occasions. They were shut down by the Feds and their equipment confiscated. Seems like shortly thereafter there was a report of the pirate's passing.

PIRATE STATIONS RULES !!!!!

They do rule

What type of music does the pirate on 106.1 in Cypress play I might try to listen to them

I was able to null the offending signal to receive KPVU. I have to put my FM dipole it close to the floor and orient it to the northwest towards Prairie View.

Has the station at 91.3 shown any patterns in terms of when they broadcast? I still can only pick up KPVU from FM 529/Fry all the way to I-10/Mason. I remember hearing of a station on 106.1 in Cypress broadcasting some goth/industrial a couple of months ago. Is this the same one?

[sarcasm]
Killer format choice, hope they stream it!
[/sarcasm]

106.1 in Cypress is playing spanish music. It's some sort of Christian format as I heard Jesus (read that as hey-soos) on a couple of different occasions.

Perhaps the weather conditions are helping.

It's not the weather because it came in "clear as a bell" at the Mason Road Randall's parking lot (the old K217DP transmitter site is the cellular tower behind the store) on Sunday afternoon.  Today, KPVU still came in strongly while I drove around Katy.

Though the tropo on Saturday was kicking as I got KCOL-FM like a local.
