pirate radio stations?

While waiting at the intersection of Madison Rd. and Ridge Rd. in Oakley. I saw a sign at the Crossroads Community Church that said something like "Don't tune your radio to 1650 AM at this intersection." Of course, when you see something like that, I tuned my car radio to 1650 AM.

It was a riot. I heard some guy rambling incoherent thoughts. I remember something about buying Crest toothpaste and sending my kids to public or private schools.

I lost the station once I crossed I-71 and drove into Pleasant Ridge.

I also picked up a pirate station on 96.1 FM. The station sounded alot like the station mentioned in the previous thread: http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,26817.0.html.

I think the one at Ridge & Madison is using a super low power transmitter like real estate agents use. It really only has an effective broadcast range of about 100-200 feet. I think the church there is using it. I heard it too and it was hilarious. Seems like the kind of thing they would do.

Don't forget, guys, it wasn't that long ago that ham operators had the 1620-1700khz band. That equipment is still out there. Of course its range would be more than a couple of miles.....
