Is anyone going to see it, what does everyone think of an American Pirate Ship in the Northern Atlantic beaming rock music to the UK in 1965....I always thought these pirates were British, who had ships off the UK coastline broadcasting rock music in the 1960's that the UK would not allow on their T-stations....Is this a true story, I still remember Reverend forgot his name from the old WXUR off the Jersey coast on a ship coming in on 1170 wiping out the station that was on in Lakewood 117 Jersey shore and interfering all the way to Salt Lake City....

That was Rev Carl McIntire. the station was on 1160 and lasted all of about a week. On its first day, it had a reasonable signal into Wilmington even with WDEL on the air. It was heard later in Ohio. Lakewood 1170 complained of the interference and McIntire shut it down.

In the "Pirate Radio" movie, it takes place on a British pirate ship, but in the story there is one American DJ on board, quite common back then. Some of the ships that operated back then were backed by American dollars.

This movie has been out in England since April. It's title overseas is "The Boat That Rocked." Unfortunately, Universal feels that they must call it "Pirate Radio" for the U.S. Plus, they're editing out 20 minutes worth of content that I suppose is considered too English for this side of the pond. It's not a realistic depiction of the real UK Pirate scene, but lots of fun with an awesome soundtrack and is highly recommended viewing!

Radio Caroline an few other Pirates helped considerably bringing the Beatles aato where they are today...because the BBC owned the transmitters. You could have the studio, mike, and DJ's , but the tranmsmitters were there's, and if they didn't like what you put on...they would pull the plug off your show from the transmitter. Only place yo can here the Beatles was the pubs or caverns, and the ships off the coast of England.
Since the 90's , were having the same backlash as pirates take to our air waves rebelling against Clear Channel, Entercomm, etc. Except it's on ground.

95% of the pirate stations I hear play the same hip hop or Caribbean music. I've heard a few dance pirates, an oldies pirate, a few religious pirates, but no rock pirates. The pirate stations are less diverse than the legal stations.

Sh** I don't know what keyboard I was using and I spent $80.00 on it , but I guess I still have to check my typing before I post anything....Pirate radio I'm referring to is 1964. That famous pirate radio station eventually started sinking into the water as it had to be rescued by authorities, and eventually dealt with the law. But it inspired pirates as we know today. Clandestines...that's another genre.

A pirate Indie/Underground Rock( I wont call it alternative) station somewhere between Philly and Baltimore would be awesome. Philly is fortunate enough to have Y-Rock on XPN but thats on HD2 and the web. Real free form rock on FM would rule!!!!!

I always bring up the point... why no Rock, Metal, Country or Alternative pirates, all the pirates are some sort of minority, (hate to use that word.. cause in a sense we all are minorities) orientation. There were a few Country pirates when there were no Commercial outlets in Central NJ, but the FCC was on them in a flash and shut them down, there was also a Metal pirate around 107.7 in Northeast Philly a few years back and guess what, shut down almost in the same week.... we all know the Chicken S*** FCC does have double standards....

Also read about this movie, originally titled "THE BOAT THAT ROCKED" and released in the UK in April 2009 in this thread:

Summary : Good Music, but hardly a Documentary... for entertainment purposes only.

We need to demonstrate to the FCC that Rock is now a radio minority in most markets so they'll back off.

Sorry, but there's no room for Rock protest songs on the "Public's" commerical airwaves....

Would upset the apple cart.

Neither Dems or Reps want any real protest songs.

Your Corporate and Political Big Brother knows what's best... for you.

What the 1996 De-Reg was really all about !!!!!

Thought I'd post a friendly reminder that Howard Hoffman's "Great Big Radio" Internet radio channel is playing samples of actual pirate radio station airchecks (including the aforementioned Caroline) all weekend long:
