Pirate Radio.....The Movie

I love the flick... I seen it on DVD imported from Europe where it is called "The Boat That Rocked" The USA version of the fil has been edited beyond belief though... Anyhow... Best flick I have seen in a while, sad it didn't do great in the box office since it was such a great movie.

Overall a good movie. A bit of a romantic slant. The producers did try to make the point that during the 60's Britain & Europe radio had no real outlet for the growing rock n roll format. The govt controlled BBC was into classical music and the opening montage showed people from all walks of life tuning into Radio Rock...because it was interesting programming and rock & roll was hitting home runs in America and the world..

Sad to see commercial radio becoming dull automated corporate controlled and mundane. Radio needs to shed the corporate suits and go back to what it was intended for.. Back in the 1920's before commercial radio existed, a few Ham radio operators started to cover elections and some played music over their ham stations. The FCC then began to grant them general broadcast licenses and the rest is history. History before corporate suits took over the media.

I enjoyed the movie because I am a radio nerd. My wife, however, thought it was dumb.

Too easy to blame "suits" when tastes change and other avenues for communication are created.

Wow--I've got to disagree with you guys. Rented it last weekend and it was TERRIBLE. Mostly a montage of people laughing for no apparent reason. The plot went nowhere...the script was terrible. Why was this movie even made? I'm sorry--cause I really WANTED to like it! But it stunk in my opinion.

Kind of dumb with a good soundtrack. I'm sure the real story of pirate radio was much more mundane. The movie would have you believe the dj's never left the boat, no evidence of a sales staff yet they sold advertising, no engineers but they stayed on the air even at the movie's end (won't spoil it) and the "evil" government agency aspect was ludicrous.

It was better than watching Mel Kiper for a second night.

It's like any movie or TV show .... or for that matter a news story ... that's on a subject you know something about: it's wrong in a thousand little ways, and sometimes big ways.

For a story that's supposed to take place during a 6-month period in 1967, the songs they play go several years into the 70's. Some of the radio and recording equipment they show didn't exist until the late 70's. And the characters and the story lines are mostly predictable cartoon cliches.

All that said, I thought it was mildly entertaining with a few better-than-average moments. You just shouldn't expect a movie like this to actually be telling an accurate "historical" story any more than a movie like Forrest Gump does.

I completely agree with jimohara. Calling this movie a piece of crap would be an insult to the piece of crap. They should have sunk the boat about 2 minutes into the movie and sent everyone home with a ticket refund and a complimentary bucket of popcorn. ;D

Tank, you ignorant slut....I told you I'd call you that! I liked the movie for what it was, a fun story with some radio mixed in....and some pretty good music too. I've already added to my DVD collection, so anytime you wanna come over and watch it, well you know how to find me....

Capt CC lives! ;D
