Anyone on here chase pirate radio broadcasts or is that a TABBOO subject here (LOL) Seems from what I have read they pretty much stick to 6.1950 to 7.0000....have yet to hear one though...

Not sure if the subject is taboo here but I guess we'll find out :)

I was really into DXing pirates back in the 80s and have a lot of QSLs and pirate recordings from that era. Back then, 7425 was the hot frequency but many stations today are operating around 6925. I picked up a few stations while casually browsing 6925 over the summer. It wasn't too hard to hear them (seemed a lot harder back in the 80s). Check out the FRN's forum for up to the minute loggings of pirate stations, this will help you catch a broadcast for sure. Good times to listen are in the evenings, weekends (though I heard many this summer on week nights), especially during holidays such as Halloween and Christmas.

I've heard other DXers talk about two current MW pirates operating with regular schedules, I think on 1710. One is out of Boston and the other is out of the New York City area. I've never heard them and perhaps someone else reading this could provide more details on this, if they are even on the air. I do get a very faint "wobbly" sounding carrier on 1710 in the evening that comes from either the east or west. No idea if it's one of these stations or just a phantom signal.

Back in the day, before the X-band expansion, I remember hearing one calling itself "WJDI" that operated on 1620 sporadically. There were many others too...

Wayyyyyy back in the early 60's there were large numbers of medium wave pirate stations operating, usually run by high school kids out of their homes.

I've told this story before, but I had a Zenith Trans Oceanic with a "wavebar" ferrite antenna which was of course directional. We had a local pirate station broadcasting regularly on the weekends in about 1961 or 62, and so we used the Zenith to hone in on the signal. We kept driving around until we had a very stong signal. As we drove down what turned out to be the street where the station was located, A truck with a directional antenna on top stopped right ahead of us and to "suits" got out and walked to up to the house. Busted!

What a waste of expensive government equipment. All they really needed was a Zenith Trans Oceanic.

Most of the pirates would get their equipment confisticated and a "official" letters. I'm thinking the young broadcasters didn't get fined, and some were back on the air soon after.

Only Pirates ive gotten was Oldies on 9913 [ i think thats the freq ]
and Radio Martini on 7405

And those strange Numbers Stations

Radio Marti is not pirate. It's a commercial Spanish station. Your oldies may have been commercial too.

I heard some pirates on 6955 kHz many years ago. I agree with Nick about the FCC; the FCC is too slow or too lazy to do anything.

Make sure to also check the newer pirate radio forums here..

Lots of people log stations on that forum and has a ton of info. Good alternative to FRNs grapevines.
