Pirates To The Fan?

FWIW, Smizik has changed his story and now says that CC is back in play for the games.

So the CC scenario could be something like this....

Games on 3WS (they will spin it as a better signal, which it is, but some of the team's top brass hate the games being on the conservative talk station)...

Pre- and post-game on 970 (with games simulcast on 970), HD-2 and the internet.

Pirates get a 24/7 HD-2 channel like the Pens have on the X.

That's ridiculous. The owners need to grow up. KDKA AM remains a viable station with a huge audience, thanks to it's talk lineup. I'd love to see the night games back on the AM.

Anyone heard the presser carried on 93.7 yesterday? The whole "you can go home again" angle, while it's true for CBS Radio, is kind of a stretch when compared to the stations involved: while they were on KDKA 1020 for years, they will now be on a different station on a different band that simply shares the KDKA call letters.

In short: If you now have to add an "FM" suffix to your new radio home, it's not necessarily "going home again."

Let's hope CBS and the Pirates can stay the course for another 70 years.

Thanks, Ken...

Curious as to what the minimum/maximum numbers of years is in this "multi-year broadcast agreement" of theirs...

I don't think they bring anyone new in to handle pre and post game shows.
Mueller is a baseball geek, he can easily handle post game.

Does Josh Miller stick around after this Steelers season?

I've listened to virtually everyone on The Fan.
Colin Dunlap is very good. Better than almost all of the full timers. If Miller does leave, I'd like to see them rework the daytime lineup and give Dunlap a shot or at least move Mueller down and give Dunlap a nighttime slot.

Dunlap has no chance. The Pirates will see to that. He made a lot of enemies in important places when he was covering the team for the P-G. You know what they say about payback.

I'm not talking about a Pirates pre or postgame show. I am talking about a regular opinion show at The Fan.
Excuse me here, but if the Pirates can tell The Fan which people they can and can't put on when it isn't Pirates programming, The Fan loses all credibility. I also seriously doubt the Pirates have any power to get that done. I have heard Pitt's AD wanted Fillipponni and Seibel out at The Fan after they were critical of Pitt last season and they are still there.
By your logic, the moment the Pirates contract kicks in, Ron Cook is definitely gone from The Fan. The people in important places with the Pirates dislike him more than anyone walking the earth.
There is no way the Pirates have any influence beyond the pre and postgame show. My point stands is that Dunlap is pretty good and he and Mueller should get bigger roles.

It would be nice if the Fan used this as an oppertunity to fix their regular shows. Evidently, station management likes what they have and how they are performing. I listen to the station every day at work, for the most part, because there isn't much alternative and I don't like to stream 970 on my PC.

Here's what they could do:

--Make Vinnie the post-game guy. Vinnie's only redeeming sports-talk quality, IMO, is that he loves baseball. You could also be 100% that he wouldn't offend the Nuttings since he's never negative about anything, except the NBA in regards to Seattle losing their francise.

--Make Seibel the pre-game guy. He's perhaps the worst talk show host on the station, but is very good at these types of shows.

--Move Dunlop into the slot with Starkey.

--Replace Vinnie with with an ex-Buc: Blass? Rooker? Tony Plush?

--Give Filliponi a bus pass out of town and wish him well

Cook is part of the regular lineup. Dunlap is a fill-in/weekend person. Cook has a contract. Dunlap works when they call. Cook is connected to the P-G, an important promotional vehicle for The Fan. Dunlap isn't.

Dunlap is small potatoes in the overall Fan picture. If the Pirates suggest they don't think he belongs, Michael Young would have no problem telling the PD not to call him. They can plug in John Phillips or Tab Douglas and it won't make a bit of difference. In business, you protect your big interests and keep your partners happy -- especially the new partners. The Fan finally has one of the main play-by-play contracts. They're not going to screw that up over some part-timer.

Best line I saw posted about the new relationship was "The Sh*t has hit The Fan".

Clever... Despite this, though, Boss Radio's comment above re: The Fan landing a "main" play-by-play contract still holds true, given their 125+-year history.
