Pirates won't be on WPGB

I hear from a reliable source that Clear Channel is terminating their relationship with the Pirates. Or, is that just how management is spinning it?? ;)

Will we see a "KDKA "sign or a "93.7 The Fan" fan sign under the announcers both at PNC next year?(I wax nostalgic) I think this is a great move. It puzzled me that a far right wing station breaks format 30 minutes before the game and 60 minutes after the game goes back to talk. All day long during the season you hear no chatter about the team. Being on The FAN next year the games are wrapped around local sports talk which would include Bucco chatter.
Now let's hope Bob Nutting gives Neal Huntington the money needed to enhance the young Bucs so we can play meaningful baseball for 6 months as opposed to the 4 months we witnessed this past season . Lets go Bucs!

The key phrase in the memo is "their needs did not match the needs of CC". The Pirates wanted the extended pre-and post game shows and a sports lead-in starting at 6.... that was part of the original deal and CC hasn't lived up to it since Ellis Cannon's departure. I'm also willing to bet the Pirates, if they continued with CC, wanted to be on a signal other than 104.7; probably 3WS, to get away from the conservative shows, then the the extended programming is even more of a disruption to the format.

Bottom line is that the team needs to be on a sports station.

So now the Bucs have backed themselves into the position of taking KD-FM or nothing?
Not a very shrewd negotiating tactic if you ask me. Either that deal is already done or
the people running that team are really, really stupid. Which, now that I think about it....

Would KD simulcast the games? 162 play-by-play broadcasts would provide desperately
needed fill for a lot of holes on 1020.

Absolutely not. The Buccos want all those out of towners to be on MLB.TV
Days of 50k blowtorches unless now broadcasting games are over if an FM especially sports option is abailable.

I don't think the Pirates backed themselves into anything. Clear Channel made clear (pun not intended) how much they really cared about Pirate baseball with the attitude that it was the one pro commodity on its plate that could be swept into the back room. What would it have taken for CC to give the Pirates a 24/7 HD subchannel on WPGB? What would it have taken for CC to do for the Bucs on WBGG what that station seems to do for other horses in the CC-FM stable? (You may take that any way you please.) Putting the Pirates on the only viable sports station in town with the strongest AM signal as a backup (and KD-AM still is, programming notwithstanding) is going to be a good thing for the team -- and it may come ("may" being the operative word) in time for the Pirates' first over-.500 season in two decades.

I think they've already got their hands full in that department with the Penguins. If another Pittsburgh sports franchise is going to get its own HD channel from Clear Channel next, it would be the Steelers.

Pittsburgh already has not one but two rock/sports format stations in "The X" and "DVE". Neither of which is worth a spit. Please don't subject us to another one.

DVE... #1 overall. #1 persons 25-54, #1 men 25-54.

The X... #1 persons 18-34, Tied #2 persons 25-54, #2 men 25-54.

Not worth a spit?

I guess the only thing that matters is that they don't play what YOU like, right?

But aside from that, Keymarket is a small-market operator that will never get a pro sports team, and 104.3's signal isn't good enough anyway.

If a major operator like Cumulus or Cox came in and bought up 2 or 3 of the remaining FM owners (Renda, Steel City, Keymarket, Salem, EMF, St. Joseph Mission) there are some signals that could work... if a commercial owner had some combination of 92.9, 96.9, 98.3, 99.7, 101.5 and 106.7 they could do some interesting things.

Popularity does not equal quality, PT. If the masses enjoy hearing "Jeremy" 10 times a day on "The X" then so be it. I, however will be listening to satellite radio for variety.

I wrote in another thread that I thought the reason why WDVE and The X do so well is they basically have monopolies on their formats. This isn't unique to Pittsburgh, I could show you many stations in many markets that do well primarily because they are the only station playing the most popular kind of music in their locale.

Monopoly of format could also explain the rise of "The Fan" after the demise of ESPN 1250, for instance, ESPN 970 notwithstanding.

However, a thought. What if tomorrow Froggy went away?

Back in 2005 for one book WDSY went to a three-way tie for No. 1. Since then, with the decline of popularity of country they've taken a hit, but let's just say Froggy went away.

Don't you think WDSY would suddenly and again make a rapid rise in the ratings; possibly contending for No. 1 again? They could play basically whatever they wanted to- sneaking in Slim Whitman if they so desired- but I have no doubt they'd suddenly contend for great riches in the local radio wars, do you?

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a mantra I live by. But is a station broken if it is ripe for the picking?

That's the question I don't have an answer to, but am inclined to say yes.

Keymarket will NOT do anything but country or oldies/classic rock. I heard they are putting country on 96.5 in Wheelling. ?!?!

I still will never understand what is worse in the radio business - the large corporations or the stupidity of the local owners.

I don't think Keymarket will do anything to Froggy, either. My question was hypothetical, and could just as easily have been reversed to "What if WDSY went away? Don't you think Froggy would be much more of a major player?"

I wrote in another thread that I thought the reason why WDVE and The X do so well is they basically have monopolies on their formats.

What IS the X's format?

"Cutting Edge Rock...from 1994."

"We Play Bob Marley All The Time Because It Makes Us Look Like Naughty Stoners."

"Every Day Is A Green Day."

"We Got So @#$%ing Lucky With This Hockey Thing."

I'll say again that the Penguins are completely out of place on that station and it just points up even more how far away it is from its stated "alternative" (that's what the CC website says it is) format.
