Pirates

Sure there are...depending on what you consider vacant. The first-adjacent frequencies are mostly vacant, except for the ones that have been appropriated by the various pirate stations, or the few first-adjacent stations in the market that have been grandfathered in, like WBLI or WPRB.

Some other frequencies are practically vacant as well. 91.9 is pretty much clear throughout the city and is a second-adjacent that I always thought should have a mid-power allocation. Instead, by day the frequency is used by a Hasidic pirate station and by night, by another pirate that plays different kinds of music, depending on what day it is....everything from dance to country!...and going by the name of WHUT. The latter station, especially, has an absolutely amazing signal when it's on, covering the entire city with a clear, sharp signal and relatively good sound quality.

But the first adjacents are the most likely to step on bigger signals and the most likely to get nailed. Especially with all that HD going on.....

Hasidic pirate radio...now THAT's NEW to MY ears! What does it sound like? :)

I can get Roadblock Radio out here in Rockaway NJ loud and clear (albeit a bit overmodulated) with tons of local essex county advertising...and their website looks decent.

Also...tonight on Channel 4 they were getting local reaction to the woman who died on that plane. who was from Haiti. Channel 4 talked to Radio Soleil 94.5 FM and showed their storefront location in Brooklyn and the control board...talk about flaunting it !

I thought the 102.5 signal was close; I live in Bloomfield. The 96.5 pirate has been on the air for a year now; and does anyone remember the white supremacist pirate station on 95.1? That was on the air for a year too, although that one only broadcasted at night, which is why they got away with it for a long time.

But yeah, the pirate situation is out of control, here in suburban Jersey, they usually use the 2nd adjacent signals with some exceptions, 87.9, 90.1, 90.5, 91.9, 95.1, 99.9, 102.3, and 104.7, have been riddled with pirates for years.

Yes The white supremecy guy is hal turner out of fort lee,he sometimes goes on the air playing the 80s internet stream or his own mix of 70s rock.96.5 THE STREETS is off exit 145 in east orange,nj this is run by a guy that used to play soca music on 99.9 and 102.3.They run commercials for irvington, and the oranges businesses.Used to be a spanish pirate on 99.9 ,hes on 102.5 now, same general area.....If the FCC wanted to bag these guys they would just hop on the GSP!HAsnt happened in years..

If the FCC did bust pirates more often, we would have less pirate stations, and a greater variety of pirate formats. We now have the same stations on for years. 87.9's been on at least 6 years, before WNYZ even came on the air. Streetz96 has been on for at least 2, and the NYC hip hop stations and WQXR have complained about it. They're selling spots now, and probably more than made up the cost of their equipment and electric bill with the spot revenue (that's not even taxed). I wonder why the businesses advertised on the pirate station. The easiest way to shut them down is to cut off its power and break the antenna.

Yes, but it's not easy to do when the FCC's NYC Field Office has, I believe, two employees, to cover this entire region. And let's not forget that they have more than just FM radio to worry about, but the entire spectrum of telecommunications.

Bust one, ten more will open. Loosening up legislation on LPFM's would help, so that legitimate radio stations can take up many of those frequencies instead...perhaps even stations targeting the same communities as these pirates.

There is reputed to be ober 100 in NYC alone. These jamaican ones are killing me here in north bronx and FCC does nothing

I have been hearing that the same station that dropped the 88.1 signal started up at 90.5 in the Queen Village area....Is this true? If so, time for the FCC to nail them...again.
