Pirates

Has anyone else noticed that there are virtually no paid spots between innings in the Pirate telecasts this year? At least later in the games (I usually don't get to tune in until around 9PM), it's all in-house promos for upcoming games and "Pirate facts" with bits on old players like Elroy Face and Bob Friend.

Did Root Sports spend all their efforts on the Pens and not sell the Bucs early on, or were there no takers? And how is the spot load on the radio games? Hopefully they're not running PSA's between innings....

C'mon man its the Pirates... If I were an advertiser I wouldn't waste my money on them either...

First off, there are quite a few sponsored segments within the play-by-play and then it seems a good spot load between innings on WPGB-104.7.

Second, at least through last week's latest trip to what one wag called the "Twilight Zone" of Milwaukee, it actually wasn't all that painful to listen to the Pirates.

The better question may come later in the season, as this is year five of a five-year deal with WPGB, though it certainly has helped "FM News Talk 104.7" in what now is a passing of its AM news-talk rival KDKA-1020 at least in overall ratings.

Despite their on-field futility, the Pirates have always ranked very high nationally when it
came to their local radio and TV ratings. I can't imagine there aren't any takers for spots
on ROOT Sports (although I must admit I have not seen their rate card).

What I dislike about ROOT is the very Yinzer-sounding guy they have doing voiceovers on
all of these promo spots. You don't need to go to that extreme to show you support the home
town teams. This is still a professional broadcast, allegedly.

Speaking of all this...what is the function of Vs (versus) now? The last time I looked at a Pens game it was on Root. So confused ???

Versus is a national sports network, owned (I think) by Comcast. I think it used to be called Outdoor Life. They and NBC share the national rights for the NHL. Versus will have Grand-Am Sports Car races, PBR, and other national events.

Root (ex Fox Sports Pittsburgh, ex KBL) is a regional sports network, meaning more or less Western Pennsylvania plus a bit over the state lines into OH, MD, and WV.

Versus gets the games when they want them, otherwise they go to the local outlet.

Since the NBC-Comcast merger, you see a lot more co-branding of Versus and Golf Channel with NBC.

Maybe there's a trend away from traditional between-innings spots (when people channel surf or leave the room) and more emphasis on in-game content, like the AGH Cam?
