Pitt moving to 93.7 The Fan

Actually, I don't know how awkward either The X and the Pens or Pitt women's basketball and WJAS really are.

I think its great marketing for the Pens- who are now given priority on the top station for Pittsburgh youth. Hockey always has been the "rock and roll sport," just the way basketball is the hip-hop sport or NASCAR is the country music sport. The cultures of The X and the Pens are very similar.

I even notice more modern rock and less classic rock songs played at the games.

As far as WJAS and Pitt women's hoops, wasn't WJAS carrying Bruce Keidan's talk show and Duquesne basketball in the '90s? Haven't they carried the Riverhounds and high school sports (and I want to say the Washington Wild Things) in the past?

And while I think Pitt women's basketball is a growing, it is closer to the levels of the sports entities in the above paragraph than they are the Pirates and Steelers.

For Pitt, they now are on a station that gets 10-20 times the +12 number WBGG had.

As far as women's basketball games on the radio- it seems to be a growing trend. I know of mid-majors that are broadcasting their games, and the NCAA has really tried to push the sport upon us over the past several years.

You are right pman44. The blue hairs will be outraged by this. WJAS should periodically break away from the games to air the complaints. Old Aunt Agnes would be more interesting to listen to than Coach Agnus.

Aunt Agnes may be upset, but she isn't buying anything. If WJAS could line up advertisers for that format for the entire day I am sure they would rather stick with their regular programming than carry women's basketball, but outside of 6am-6pm M-F they can't sell anything, and what they do sell during those hours has more to do with the on air talents than new clients the sales staff are pulling in. So they take hours that would normally not generate any revenue and make a couple of dollars by clearing an entity that CBS Pittsburgh doesn't want on any of its properties, because it will be a ratings killer. So CBS throws a couple of bucks Renda's way to take it off their hands and everybody wins, Pitt gets their women's games on the air, Renda makes a couple of sheckels in hours they normally wouldn't and CBS doesn't lose any sheckels by airing a product that will chase the audience away on any of their stations they would have ceded the air time on.

As for Aunt Agnes, if her and her friends were buying more caskets or assisted care living this might never have happened.

I LOLed at "Pittsburgh youth." I doubt if Pittsburgh youth are feeling in touch with Bob Marley, or Pearl Jam, or any of the rehashed and ancient (to them) songs that the X regularly plays. I just don't get the concept of their playlists being as grunge-heavy as they are - a group of artists that pretty much across the board have contempt for any "jocks" - and running sports.

The Penguins aren't going anywhere. They have ties to CC for the next five seasons.

The Pirates had a somewhat messy divorce with CBS. There are still people in positions of power on both sides who can't stand someone on the other side. It would take some work to get them back together.

Well, corportate, I tend to agree with you on this point.

But the last I looked the average age of an X listener was 28.

Perhaps it's because they have no other real alternative for contemporary rock music on Pittsburgh airwaves, but for better or worse, The X is the station of Pittsburgh's youth.

The X is not the station of Pittsburgh's youth. Pittsburgh's youth is listening more to KISS than the X. The X is for Pittsburgh's late 20's, 30 and 40 something's who liked the alternative of the 90's. When the X first went on, I'd say they had a younger crowd. But, you cannot be serious when you say that the X is for Pittsburgh's youth. That is just not true.

I didn't think it was possible to have a more awkward combo than the Pens and the X, but this has that beat by a country mile. It makes the women's team look sub-pathetic IMO.

Odd friends for sure, but the Pens made the X number one at nights this season. Watch what the numbers will do this summer, dwiddle back down til the Pens are back.

Their numbers already pretty much evaporated this past month...

That's exactly my point. The Pens fans tune there for the game and then tune out as soon as it's over. Compared to Steelers fans, many of whom are probably already listening to DVE anyway.
