Pitt With a P

Chad Pitt begins his show today at 3:00 PM on FM100, from what I hear. Can I also throw out that Jack Parnell is one of the nicest guys and that some of his radio stories need to be in a book.

K~

Absolutely right K.
Jack is a class act and he needs to write them down.

Years ago I nominated Jack for the "quietest page turner" award, awed at his ablility to do long form scripts with few stumbles.

Amen to all that and more. Jack is a gentleman, an accomplished voice talent, and a very nice man. Our paths have crossed few times over the years, but I've admired his work and his personality for over five decades.

BTW, I've always heard he had a memorable on-air resignation from WMC the morning they put the country format on in his show. I heard he played a song and said, roughly, "That was Johnny Paycheck on WMC and, speaking of paychecks, I'll be picking mine up a little later this morning." Is that anywhere close to the truth? I've always hoped so. If it is true, I place Jack a very close second to Fred Cook insofar as integrity is concerned...and there's no one I've ever known who has more integrity than Mr. Cook.

Didn't Jack do a "Dialing for Dollars" thing on WHBQ-TV many years ago? Also, was he ever the studio host for WHBQ's "Million Dollar Movie" or was that always Joe Dyer?

In 1968, Jack was very unhappy with the "dictation" he was taking--almost literally--from RKO's group-wide Bill Drake Consultancy. Having done pretty well with the Drake thing in their first non-westcoast venture, KAKC/Tulsa, I was offered the chance to move to HBQ. I'd listened to Jack while I was still in highschool over in Arkansas, so I wasn't real sure what I was getting into when I was told it would be up to me whether or not I'd like to keep him in the lineup. After talking with GM D. A. Noel, then visiting with Jack, I felt like it would be a waste of a great talent--and a lot of years of his name's being synonymous with WHBQ--if he left, so I asked him if he would stay. He said he would, and my earlier fears evaporated almost immediately. Jack was not only one of the most capable and dependable people I've worked with in any market, he was also one of the most cooperative -- especially, for someone who had previously sat in the chair from which I was now wreaking Drake-havoc on the homefolks.
Jack took back over as interim PD when I got axed...and did not rub it in even a little, when the ratings immediately went up after he (reluctantly) took back the chair until Al Casey could get there.
After almost 30 years of no contact, Jack and I have been back in almost daily e-touch for the past few years. His are always among the first messages I open, and the ones at which I laugh the most loudly. And Jack, why doesn't anyone ever mention the damn camel? ::)

Jack DID do the Million Dollar Movie, and I'm pretty sure he did "Dialing..." BEFORE Joe Dyer. I also remember some TV spot with Jack wearing a Doctor's lab coat with a stethoscope! But I swear - I can't remember the product or why?!? Jack is a first-rate guy, and one of the BEST in the business.

We could probably crash this website's often spotty capabilities singing Jack's praises. And rightfully so. A nicer guy I've never met - and one at who's feet I'm happy to scrounge the occasional nugget of wisdom.

All that, and he makes a damn fine Apple Streudel.
