Pittsburgh TV News: Everyone's A Winner

I thought perhaps they were bringing back the "Watch and Win" sweepstakes.

Adventuretime.

Contact with Marie Torre.

BTW, there is a new series running on Cartoon Network called "Adventure Time".
Paul Shannon must be rolling over in his grave. Whoever did this must have had the
express intent of causing little children to have nightmares.

Freddy: I completely forgot about that show. Here's one that sould definetly be brought back:

"The O'Brien & Garry Electric Video Show!"

Good one, had nearly forgotten about that one. How about that stinko sitcom
Channel 4 produced with Jack Bogut as part of the deal to entice him over from KDKA?

Didn't he have two different shows over at the Wilkinsburg Broadcasting Company? He did have his daily talk show, which I believe came on at 10 in the morning and was a replacement for "AM Pittsburgh." I vauguely recall the sitcom that was set in a diner called "Big Sky Cafe." {The neurons are working overtime trying to remember this stuff.}

It is true that Hearst lured Bogut over to Ardmore Boulevard and management over there used TV to seal the deal. A good friend of mine who witnessed it all back then said that Jack really wanted to do TV along with his radio gig, and negotiated for that as part of his contract when it came up for renewal with Group Wonderful in 1982-83. KD wasn't really enthusiastic about Bogut being on TV. The story, from what I was told, is that management over at Channel 4 heard about his desire to do television and made this possible. The story sounded really intriguing when I heard it about 10 years ago, and part of it was that Bogut almost re-upped with KD at the 11th hour.

Maybe Rick Starr could offer his insight into this as he was one of the main players of this as it happened.

Regarding KDKA(AM) and TV, something I didn't know until a few years ago is that behind what was the AM studio console, where Jack Bogut, Art Pallan, Clark Race and the others jocked, is a doorway with a staircase that goes down to the TV studio. As often as I visited the AM studio, I wasn't aware of the rather obscured door and still have no idea of what purpose it served. It may have allowed shared talent like Paul Long to get back and forth between the AM and TV. Of course, 1020 has been gone from Gateway for well over two years.

Actually there was a cat walk behind that door. It was quite narrow and I had to run cables along the wall on several occasions. I think there was a ladder that ran down to the studio. Other than that, I don't know why that door was there.

The mention of the Jack Bogut TV experiment brought back some horrific memories...so I decided to revisit the nightmare by watching the 1985 pilot of "Big Sky Cafe." I'm convinced no one had the courage to tell jack that on camera he was as exciting as a Gimbels mannequin. And those glasses! He looked like he was wearing an AMC Pacer on his face. And I never realized that Jack had more and bigger bags under his eyes than a Giant Eagle Checkout. Not to mention that I saw more talent assembled at the 1885 St Bonaventure 4th grade play. Really, that was one of the most embarassing moments in Pittsburgh media.

An emergency escape hatch for either Mike Levine or Roy Fox to flee the scene when
mobs with pitchforks started arriving outside the studio?

ahh, yes.....Big Sky Café, that was it. I remember showing up at a young lady's door to take her out on a date
and found her entire family sitting around the living room watching that pilot. The looks on their faces were priceless.
Sort of like that crowd reaction shot to Springtime for Hitler in the original version of The Producers. Did you tape
it back in '85 or is that turkey actually available someplace now?

To experiance the terror of Big Sky Cafe, just google it and WALLA !!!!! Protect your eyes when viewing.

Google brought me the menu from an actual Big Sky Café in San Luis Obispo.
Will do some more intense searching for it later. I remember an actor playing
an Indian who was actually more wooden than the ones you used to find
outside cigar stores.

Google "Big Sky Cafe" WTAE

I believe the bad actor that played the Indian, (KENO TA TA?) was local product Butch Luick? (not sure of the spelling.)

I am not sure if Luick is still alive, I thought he may have passed away a few years ago.
