Pittsburgh v. Tampa

After checking what is left of the FM dial, I think that WRBQ in Tampa generates more old school excitement than any Classic Hits or AC station in Pittsburgh. Better jocks, better jingles, and better music selection. Just my opinion.

It should be a good game. The Bucs draft class looks really good, and Ben will be on his vacation.

Tune in to Billy, Tunch, and Wolf for all the coverage - 102.5 DVE

Since (besides me) no one here has ever heard Q105, it will be hard to have much of a discussion. Just my opinion.

Good point. But I heard of Q105 when I lived in Virginia back in the days of the "Q ZOO".

Yeah, but you're a junkie!

I'm into rock and sports stations so here's what I know about comparing the two markets.

Which ARE very comparable markets due to the age demographics, not to mention for sports fans they are both MLB, NFL, NHL & Big East markets.

Rock- I have been listening to WDVE for years, so to me there isn't a whole lot of new to me here.

In fact, there isn't a whole lot of joy to the station. If I hear them make fun of one more Pittsburgh accent . . . .

Look- I'll just say it. STOP! Stop making fun of Pittsburgh accents, WDVE! It's a joke that has been played- like the chicken that crossed the road or "Who's On First?"

Except at least "Who's on First?" has some sort of comic lesson on timing and delivery. There's merit to learning the bit in "Stand Up Comedy 101."

"Don't feed dem duks- dey got disease."

Wow. How wonderful. You have just made the face of Pittsburgh a homeless derelict. No wonder people are moving away and the WDVE audience isn't getting any younger.

WDVE has got to be the only place that plugs John McIntire shows. WDVE was the only place that thought Larry Reeb was funny with bits like: "Marriage is good. Here's a tip. Never wake up your wife with you buddies at 4 a.m. and say 'b-tch, make us breakfast!"

Ho! Ho! Ho! What a funny man Uncle Lar is!

But I listen to The Bone in Tampa and when it comes to hip- they're it. I search out "An Open Letter From Galvin" from The Cowhead Show every week. It's absolutely hilarious. His bit on doctors- and for that matter rappers- needs to be amended into The Constitution.

Mark Madden has been known to want to steal Bubba the Love Sponge bits (okay- the crudest Bubba the Love Sponge bit- slaughtering a calf on the air- but still).

The playlist is about the same.

I will say I think WDVE's Jimmy Krenn is a local comedy legend and deserves respect- far more than what he's been getting online lately.

But somehow, The Bone has been able to be shocking without really being offensive- even when they pick on you.

Now, as far as sports stations go- it's not even close. Pittsburgh all the way.

One of the problems with sports talk in Tampa is that it is a transient population- so there will be as many Yankees fans as there are Rays fans, for instance.

But if you thought sports in Pittsburgh were the Steelers and everything else- try Tampa. What's sad is that down there it is the Bucs and nothing else- and the BUCS AREN'T THAT GOOD!

It could be the middle of March- spring training in full swing, Lightning going for the playoffs, and for that matter South Florida could be competing for an NCAA berth.

No matter. They're talking the Bucs. They're talking 3-13 football.

I'm convinced one of the reasons the Rays have such trouble drawing, or for that matter the fact I was able to just have the lady behind the booth at the Lightning's arena GIVE me a ticket for free when I went to see the Pens play there, is they get absolutely no attention on local sports talk radio. None.

Hosts here will regularly bring up the Pirates, Penguins, and colleges. I've listened to the in Tampa when the Florida Gators have just secured a berth in the BCS Title Game, and they are still talking the Bucs when they are 3-10.

That's like hosts here ignoring Penn State playing for a national championship because the Pirates signed a Rule 5 player.

There's no pulse on the local sports scene in Tampa sports talk radio. I think one of the stations- 1010- operates on brokered time. The last I heard they had a show hosted by three women who presumably spoke about what player looked the nicest in his uniform.

Magic 94.9 and WSHH are a match with 3 "live" shows and Delilah.
WMNY and WTAN are both low powered AM's with nothing but brokered shows.
WFLA compares to KDKA and 104.7
Churban WLLD and Urban WBTP matches up with_______________ in Pittsburgh
WDUV and WJAS are sorta alike except WDUV is focusing on a younger (sic) audience. WDUV is just too hip except now WJAS has TL. This is confusing.
BOB and 3WS are more exciting that WXGL, but duller than Q105 as I said before. WXGL plays Classic Hits and is automated 16 hours a day.

I ask you to listen to Galvin's open letter to rappers and then tell me if it's such a bad thing 106.7 isn't playing urban anymore.

They still coulda stayed secular. Or maybe there just aren't enough formats left to fill a band. Considering that WJAS is not at the very bottom, what could a WDUV do in Pittsburgh? It would be on every radio in the Maxon except for the kids who wash cars.

About the same as it does in Tampa, rank near the top in ratings and near the bottom in revenue.

If there were enough money in it, WLTJ would never have migrated away from the "Lite FM" sound of the 90's. Same goes for WSHH.

My brief experience with being in Tampa is that an AM radio is a fairly useless device down there.
There always seems to be a thunderstorm going on somewhere within a 50 mile radius, 24 x 365.
Not to mention all the 300kW Cuban stations.

What do you have against songs praising the Lord?

Not a thing. I just think they sound better below 92.1 or on AM.

While living in Tampa, I was not impressed with their local radio talk shows, specifically sports. This is one area where Pittsburgh has it all over Tampa. I did enjoy living there however and will be moving back. I ended up listening to Pittsburgh radio talk via the internet. WDAE (The Sports Animal) leaves alot to be desired. Perhaps you have to be from the area and have a vested interest in Tampa sports but I could not listen to anyone on that station except syndicated Jim Rome. I found Steve Duemig's voice to be unbearable to listen to and they have a clown named Whitney Johnson who I guess is their version of Chris Mack. (Not a good thing). As much as we complain about Pittsburgh talk radio, in my opinion, it is much better than Tampa talk radio.

Whitney's a riot... he's a Deadhead who drives around in this old truck and asks the Rays manager Joe Maddon questions like "What's your favorite Allman Brothers' song?" He is the the classic Florida employee, someone who is willing to work for absolutely no money. But you get what you pay for. For a while, he was actually half of the morning show when the format was on 1250.

I'm actually a big Duemig fan. He crosses the line in getting angry with callers sometimes, but some of that is his Philly background. he did some excellent stuff with the editor of the Tampa Bay Bucs' Pewter Report during football season, and could get off of sports when community issues caled for it. I still stream his show from time to time.

But that's about it for the market.... CC is the only company doing ANYTHING on AM down there, and they are mostly the same syndicated stuff as everywhere else. The rest of the local talk is bad, a lot of it pay-for-play.

Steve Duemig may actually be talented. I could never listen to his show for more than a few minutes at a time because of his voice. I found myself clearing my throat when I would listen to him because he always sounded like he had to clear his. PT: Does he have something wrong with his voice that makes him sound that way or is that just the way his voice is? Other than that PT we are in agreement. Tampa is a pretty lame talk radio market. All in all though, I did enjoy living there.
