Plan to air Ed Schultz on AFN reversed

Listen to the Audio of the staged session

The problem with the free republic crowd is that they post that Ed wasn't telling the truth. The evidence is so clear and so widely known that you wonder what blinders the "freepers" are wearing.

Reporters listed to the practice and some actually got video of the practice session. This video was shown on several stations. the audio is widely distributed. Ed was telling the truth that the even was fully staged.

NPR posted the audio and provided a story (All Things considered) about the session at this link:

Conspiratorial interpretation...

Did Ed stage the attack on the Pentagon media handler, knowing AFN would ban him or suspend his show, thereby to gain some "street cred" with libs who think he's a "sellout" a la Alan Colmes, and not to be trusted, and who are mad that Randi Rhodes gets delayed in certain markets for his show?

Was the Bill Bennett flap an example of similar "staging"?

How can one be offended of a critique that was accurate. The bigger offense was that it was done in the first place. Our soldiers shouldn't be used for this kind of thing.

Stephanie Miller would probably be the best show choice if AFN was looking to serve the younger demographic. Allowing Limbaugh access and not allowing a liberal counterpart is ridiculous.

Blogs, blogs, blogs...

Every source cited in this thread is a Blog. Doesn't anybody even even think of reading newspapers any more? No wonder there is so much flamming on this board. Apparently, nobody is operating on the basis of anything resembling a neutral account.

And let we forget, the American Forces Network does carry NPR programming - not just Rush.

...centrist programming as a balance for rightist programming, with no progressive material offered? After complaining about lack of a "neutral account"? That's rich...
______________

Yes, I read newspapers along with the blogs. Trusting journalists makes no more sense than trusting politicians.

You think newspapers will give you a more accurate picture of events?

WASHINGTON (AP) - Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said Sunday the death toll from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath is in the thousands, the first time a federal official has acknowledged what many had feared.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said it was likely thousands were dead based on the city's population of 500,000, the percentage who left before the storm hit and the number evacuated from the shelters.

"So you probably have another 50-60,000 out there," Nagin said. "You do the math, man, what do you think? Five percent is unreasonable? Ten percent? Twenty percent? It's going to be a big number."

Im still trying to figure out how people can ignore the obvious. The video shows here telling the soldiers at worst moment " to take a breath " before answering the question. She asked the same questions Bush asked during his time at the podium. Anybody disagree that what she was doing was staging? Don't believe me...look at google, look at the bloody video....see for youself...there are dozens of reports about this event and how it was staged.

If i post too many newspapers I wonder what the excuse de jour would be.
The _________ news paper is part of the _________ media...thats why the video and the audio was posted. After that you can use google and find something yourself if you care to do so.

The Liberal Talk Radio Update

No, that was just right-wing stupidity

Rush's show advocates political positions. NPR is not at all an equivalent. That conservatives still seem to suggest that NPR is the home of liberal media bias (and they clearly never listen) and serves as a counterbalance to conservative talk radio just doesn't fly. As I've said before, not a day passes when you can't hear a William Kristol or Tony Blankley or David Brooks all over NPR programs. Limbaugh's show doesn't invite a Rachel Maddow or Maureen Dowd on to debate the issues - NPR always has a place for the other side.

No, it was just stupidity. Right-wing had nothing to do with it.

Senator Harkin "Outraged"

> Until a logical explaination is made, Allison Barber shafted

Senator Harkin of Iowa is livid white hot mad about the whole situation. Evidently, he was a major spearheader of the effort to get Schultz on the air. He wants an answer from the Pentagon about this matter and if Barber was involved in the decision, he wants "staffing changes" which is a nice way to say that Mrs. Barber better update her resume because she may not be working there much longer. Of course, if she's a government employee, "firing" usually means re-assigned to do something else.

Rush Limbaugh strongly objects to the addition of any liberal talk to AFN. He told the Washington Post that "I am the political balance."

Yeah.

Harkin also promises to monitor AFN's upcoming programming changes which are expected to add several new talk shows. Harkin is concerned that only programs which support the administration's political line get on the AFN airwaves.

Is UPI neutral enough for your taste?

Security & Terrorism
Radio host says he was gagged by Pentagon
WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A talk radio host says his program, slated to debut on a Pentagon radio station Monday, was pulled to punish him for airing audio embarrassing President Bush.

Ed Shultz played an audio tape of Pentagon communications official Allison Barber helping troops in Iraq rehearse for their broadcast video teleconference with the president last week. Barber walked them through questions and their answers and warned them the president might ask questions not from the script.

The incident was widely considered an embarrassment to the White House, which appeared to be coaching soldiers for its own political purposes.

According to People for the American Way, Barber personally called Schultz -- regarded as a liberal in the world of talk radio -- on Monday to tell him his show would not be airing Oct. 17 after all.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman denied any connection between the Barber tape and the decision to cancel Schultz's radio show. He confirmed the Armed Forces Radio Network is looking to diversify its offerings - it currently carries conservatives Rush Limbaugh and James Dobson's Focus on the Family -- but said no offers have yet been made, including to Schultz.

However, the Fargo, North Dakota radio host received a letter from AFRN confirming the Oct. 17 debut, which was posted on the People for the American Way web site Monday.

The letter was written by Manny Levy, chief of the Radio Division for AFRN. Levy refused to comment to United Press International.

"AFN Radio has squared away everything on our end to begin carrying the first hour of 'The Ed Schultz Show' each day, beginning Monday, Oct. 17, 2005," states the Sept. 29 letter.

Levy added: "An awful lot of people in the government had (or tried to have) a hand in the program selection process that ended with the decision to add 'The Ed Schultz Show.'"

"I'm afraid the staff member got ahead of the decision," said Whitman.
