Planet Green

Apparently Discovery Home Channel relaunch itself as Planet Green earlier today. I don't get this channel on my lineup so I was curious when Discovery, TLC, and the Animal Planet all had a very annoying green countdown clock ticking down to the relaunch. I've never heard of Discovery Home before until I look it up on wikipedia. This channel isn't for me since I don't really buy into this global warming crisis which is what this channel is dedicated to.

I don't understand why some people are so set against anything positive for the environment.

If I came to your house, lit up a fat cigar and flicked the ashes whereever I pleased, ate all your food and dropped all the packaging on the floor, left dirty dishes in the sink, didnt flush, re-arranged your furniture, broke things,,,, you would throw me out. We need to treat our planet with the same respect we would expect from someone visiting our house.

The problem is that those who consider themselves "green" act as if what you described is all we want to do, just because we don't agree with their agenda. I believe in caring for the planet - it's my home, too - but so far, the only thing I've seen the "green movement" do is to try to remove the green from my wallet. Despite what the advocates say, it is not settled science, and we need someone on TV who will be fair and balanced enough to actually report that. (And no, I'm not necessarily talking about Fox News, even if I am stealing their slogan.)

Who cares about global warming? The solution is to pollute the environment less, and can't we agree that polluting less is a good thing? I never understood the logic of fighting against cutting back on pollution because global warming may or may not exist.

In reality it doesn't really matter how many factories we shut down in the United States. The production will simply move to countries like China, India, and Mexico that don't have the environmental policies we have. The pollution will site exist but the economic benefits will move overseas.

Having seen a little of the new channel, that's moreso what the channel is all about. The channel is not about global warming (though I think they have a Tom Brokaw special planned about it), it's focused on showing viewers how to live more eco-friendly. There's a show about celebrities living environmentally friendly, a show about green building techniques, a show about organic cooking, and a show about how to be less wasteful around the home. It's lifestyle-oriented, not science-driven, and while it's a niche it just might work.

I should have know better that this topic, which was suppose to be about a channel, was going to turn into a global warming discussion. I'm on the side that says Earth is going through a natural heating/cooling cycle which is caused by the sun's solar cycles. Fyi, I'm just a regular agnostic conservative, not a bible thumbin' one.

If this channel is about more than just global warming, then more power to them.

The logic lies within the law of diminishing returns. Eventually, you reach a point where the benefit of additional cleanup doesn't justify the cost. Often, you can tell that something has reached that point when it's being sold primarily as something you can feel good about. Carbon credits come to mind first, but the water use restrictions and recycling mandates in Germany are another example.

Getting back to Blue Wanderer's topic, if the channel is presenting a reasonable approach to environmentalism, then that's great; I'm pleasantly surprised. "Conserve" is the root word of "conservative", and I believe in the old Yankee saw, "Use it up, wear it out; make it do or do without." But what I'm expecting is that the channel is just another place for the left wing to preach their "gospel" of Earth worship and redistribution of wealth.
