Planet Radio is moving down the dial

According to their facebook post from earlier today, they are moving to 97.3. Will this change help the coverage in Duval county?

"Starting Friday we will NO longer be on 106.9, we have heard your complaints and we got a BIGGER stick with more power!!!!!!!!
97.3 IS WHERE YOU WILL FIND PLANET RADIO STARTING FRIDAY."

We all now know this was a lie.

Power was reduced to 99 watts & Gainesville's WSKY tramples it daily. The current programming on 106.9, however, comes in very clear.

Although the 106.9 translator comes in very well on the Southside of Duval County and the northern half of St. John's County, the signal is very poor on the Westside and the Northwest part of Duval County. This is rather strange because of the station, according to the FCC, is supposed to be a non-directional antenna pattern with roughly the same power and antenna height and broadcasting from nearly the same location as the 97.3 translator, which comes in much better than the 106.9 translator on the Westside and Northwest side of Duval County. In fact, the signal of the 106.9 translator always amazes me every time I go on a trip to St. John's County because the signal is very good down there and can be heard all the way down to the St. Augustine Outlet Mall exit on I-95 clearly. However, the signal of 106.9 is poor to very poor once you cross the St. John's River over to the Westside of town despite the fact the distance between the transmitter of 106.9 and the Westside and Northwest side of Jacksonville FL is much closer compared to the St. Augustine Outlet Mall. The transmitters of the 106.9 and 97.3 translators, which are both located at the antenna farm on Hogan Rd. on the Southside where the majority of the FM and TV stations in Jacksonville FL transmit from. On the other hand, the signal of the 97.3 translator matches its FCC licensed coverage contour based on my observation in comparison to the 106.9 translator, which broadcasts with a much stronger signal than the licensed power to the south and east of the transmitter but much weaker than licensed power to the north and west of the transmitter. Over the years, I've often wonder why there is such a stark difference in signal strength of the 106.9 translator west of the transmitter versus the south and east when theoretically the signal is supposed to be non-directional based on the FCC coverage maps?

^ Good analysis.

Planet's format is active rock, which targets white males 18+. Based on this and the synopsis above, Planet should have stayed on 106.9, as the white population is greatest on the southside and St. Johns Co. I believe 106.9 is still running a Hispanic format, and those audiences are better served by a station that reaches where they tend to be (west and north sides), so that programming should move to 97.3.

It's not rocket science, I<3. Yet another reason your company is in the toilet.

Bring back the rock!
