102.3 flipped from classic rock KXCC to dance KZJM 1/1998. Within a few weeks, they changed calls from KZJM to KAJM and then became KBTE "the Beat" (followed a battle with KZFM over the use of the slogan "jamz" and a call sign that looked a lot like KZFM). KBTE became modern AC KKPN "102.3 the Planet" 3/2001 (the KKPN calls and format moved down from 104.5). They shifted to top 40 by year end and then to hot AC the following summer. They went back to top 40 last October.

Thank you so much for that wonderful anaylisis! :)

KBTE became modern AC KKPN "102.3 the Planet" 3/2001 (the KKPN calls and format moved down from 104.5).

When did 104.5 become KKPN-FM Corpus? Up until May 1998, KKPN was located at 102.9 here in Houston, replacing longtime heritage standards KQUE. In May 1998, KKPN flipped formats to "Estereo Latino" KLTN and remains that way to this day. Did KKPN just move from Houston to Corpus Christi, and if so why on earth would that occur?

The KKPN calls moved to Corpus pretty quickly after they left Houston as I recall. However, only the Planet name and calls ended up in Corpus. Nothing else of the old 102.9 The Planet went there. From what I had heard, AMFM was going to move KKPN to 93.7 but changed its mind at the last minute. So, The Arrow survived. The Planet went away, and a struggling Corpus Christi station reimaged.

Correct..104.5 Gregory/Corpus Christi was a new facility. It signed on as modern AC "104.5 the Planet" under the calls KBHD. It then picked up the KKPN calls. The KKPN calls and format moved to KBTE 102.3 3/2001 and 104.5 became classic rock KPUS "the Octopus."
