plasma radio

Greetings all:

I found this on EnglishRussia.com. Who is up for a (relatively simple) explanation on how what you are seeing and hearing in this video is possible.

150kw radio transmitter: http://englishrussia.com/?p=2852

If you don't read Russian you can scroll down the page for an English translation of what is written in the video.

Enjoy

It reminds me of when I used to listen to the station by holding onto a large screwdriver while touching it to one of the phasing coils of a 1/4 wave tower matching network. You get a diode detection of AM. Wonderful RF exposure capacitively-coupled through the screwdriver handle to my body!

There was a plasma speaker that was produced for high-fi that produced very low distortion reproduction due to the minimal moving mass of the radiator. The S/N ratio was not the best but the distortion and high frequency transfer function was very linear http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_arc_loudspeaker.

A science experiment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEeWtBAE5LY . The poor recording on youtube does not do it justice.
