Plaster?

I'd venture to say the departure of Plaster will end up being the least of the issues 104.5 will be facing in the near future.

It is sad that two of the better known names have jumped ship rather than ride the Titanic. A true testament to the attributes of our friends from ATL.

...............

I agree completely. And it doesn't make me happy as I really enjoy "The Wake Up Zone". There's only so much I can take of Clay and 3HL. If it wasn't for "wake up" I probably wouldn't listen to the zone anymore.

I was just thinking of all the events and activities that Plaster has been a part of. The man has connections.

What do you not like about 3HL?

Sometimes it's way to "silly" for my tastes. They can be more like a FM rock station morning show than a sports show at times...and many folks like that. But when I turn on a sports station THAT'S what I want to hear...sports. I don't want to waste my time listening to Clay's opinions on animals for example. Yes, it can be very funny but I don't need 30 minutes of it.

Plus it drives me crazy how BB whispers so much. You have to crank the radio up to hear his comments then the other guys come BLASTING through. I wish they would crank up BB's mic then slam it with a limiter/compressor.

Those are the two biggest reason.

I wonder how they would feel if the station wanted them to move to late afternoon?

I think 3HL would work great in afternoon drive.

I listen to The Ticket out of Dallas most days. They do sports talk/guy talk, with it heavy on guy talk.

WSIX managed to keep most of its audience after House left.

Maybe they did but I wonder if the audience is as passionate and loyal and look at TSL. They'd hang on with Jerry.
Good points about personalities and the changed business but I know you mean the business changed not because the personalities weren't working anymore..the business just didn't want to pay for personalities. If I owned Coca Cola stock and heard "well our business is off because the grocery business has changed, they only stock their store brands now" I'd ask "but are the customers drinkiing as much ? do they like Big K cola over COCA cola? Nope

In the bigger picture, vs the blimp on the screen now, somebody will win who embraces and respects talent like we knew it to be. Sterile radio won't work or win.

You're talking about a chicken and egg thing. But really the change-over occured before consolidation. And big companies are still paying big dough for personalities. Maybe not 24/7, but morning shows are getting good money. Adjusted for inflation, they're making a lot more now than John R and Ralph Emery made in their heyday. But as I said, Jack in Nashville is beating a lot of live & local people. Most listeners are more interested in the music than the DJs.

Hey guys, against my better judgement, I had to chime in on this one.

First, I completely respect your opinion if you don't enjoy what Karla and I are doing on the BIG 98. Everything is subjective and, as much as I'd like everyone to love us, I understand that's not reality. However, I have complete respect for what our company did...hiring two people who understand the legend of Gerry House, as well as the radio station itself. When I moved here 11 years ago, I said that I would never want to be here when Gerry retired. When that day came, I didn't want someone from another market to move in and disregard everything this station stands for. Karla and I had more to lose than gain by coming in behind Gerry...but we both love this station and want to carry on the tradition. Granted, we play more music than GH ever did...don't blame that on management, blame that on PPM. I've seen a ton of great morning shows removed because of the PPM results. None of us "radio people" agree with it...but it's all we have.

Finally, you're right, we don't have the loyalty with the listeners that GH had. Gerry said to me a long time ago that what made him so successful was his ability to stay in one market for so long. Who knows if Karla and I will have the same opportunity (I might be bagging groceries in a year) but at least the station is giving us a chance to be live, local and free from liner cards.

Again, I'll step away from the computer and let you pick us apart. I just felt compelled to share our side of the story.

Jack in Nashville is beating a lot of live & local people. Most listeners are more interested in the music than the DJs.

When most people get to work they can't pay attention to what a DJ says and just want music going in the background. Plus, so many morning shows get sterile with them just repeating the same jokes and skits over and over. If I listen to John Boy and Billy today it sounds JUST LIKE any show they did 15 yrs ago. But a lot of folks like that.

But the thing with Jack is that they don't play the EXACT same songs ALL the time. SO many stations play a loop over and over.

I think you have SOME listener loyalty because you were a known factor. That's what made this a good idea. I think if they'd replaced GH with some outside talent, even if it was legendary in another market, that person would have had a steeper hill to climb. But as I said earlier, listener loyalty simply isn't as easy to get any more. We're seeing it everywhere. Up in Seattle, KMPS has lost its #1 status since replacing Icabod Cain with outside talent. And I think as all of the legends retire around the country, you'll see that there is no replacement for that person, no matter what they do. Heck, look at all the stations that haven't been able to replace Howard Stern. Someone made a list of his old stations, and how many of them have struggled and changed formats since he left. Today's hosts are great at what they do. They work hard to serve their communities and communicate with their listeners. But no matter what they do, it's unlikely they can achieve what their predecessor did, because radio itself has changed, and the way people use radio has changed.

The only local personality that I still listen to is Mary Glen(n) Lassiter on 105.9 the Rock. Mainly because she plays a format (in this case, classic rock) that I listen to. But I miss her skits like the daily call from her politically incorrect Uncle Glen Glenn! It's possible that Clear Channel may have reined her in a bit, or it may be because such skits don't work as well on midday radio.

I like "Jack" because "he" is sarcastic and irreverant, but many times those snippets of songs that they so frequently play are of songs that you will never hear played in their entirety over "Jack." At least, I never hear any of them. To me, that is misleading.

I left SIX when they fired Al and Duncan so Gerry's actual leaving had no impact on me whatsoever. I was gone not to return.

I just looked at their convoluted website to learn more about the on air talent but got frustrated pretty quickly. There was a lady named Carla (Karla?) who did traffic. Is she now one of the morning show hosts?
