Play 98.7 Flips To Adult CHR

Did anyone record the flip And thanks what's going on HD 2 Channel

It's on their new site. Smooth Jazz is on HD 2 I believe.

Mix is going to be in a lot of trouble. Anyone know what they are doing in am drive?

Mix was already in trouble. The only reason they're still around is from a sales prospective. It's (along with a dayparted FLZ) the full time targeted female AC radio station within the Clear Channel group. All this format change does is split the pie 30 something female audience a bit more between Mix, Magic, Point, and dayparts of FLZ. Sounds to me like CBS is using the 2 pronged approach with Wild skewing young CHR and Play skewing adult. One thing I've already noticed is hardly anything from the 90's and nothing from the 80's. This separates it from The Point and somewhat from what I would call the heritage station, Magic. Play sound really current and that's where Mix might be trouble. Mix hasn't always been really focused as the old Star 95.7 was. In fact, that's what I think this new station sounds like. We'll have to see what the rotation rates are on currents.... that burn factor and repetition is gonna be the tell tale sign of what they want to be. We know with Orlando as PD it will be programmed very carefully (and well) as to not hurt Wild at all.

Anyone have any idea if CBS will be hiring live air personalities for this new station? I heard from a friend who knows Orlando that Dana (former WFLZ midday DJ) will be starting on Tuesday.

This move is nothing new. CBS is doing the same thing in Sacramento with KZZO tweaking from Modern AC to current-based Adult Top 40 (as "Now 100.5") while KSFM adjusting its Rhythmic Top 40 approach by going younger, all to put a dent in both Top 40/KDND and Hot AC KGBY's ratings. And it sure paid off in the July PPMs.

anyone know where smooth jazz 98.7 station got moved to or is it just gone completely?

I actually think Now 100.5 sounds great, even though I called hot AC stations "my girlfriends' station" :p

Now back to this station, this station might be able to do a bit better than the previous smooth jazz format did. They just have to advertise on the streets and even on TV.

... AND who is Dana? Doesn't ring a bell. I guess she wasn't that good if she came/left so quickly that people like me can't remember who she is. Does anyone know? What time was she on?

She did middays on FLZ (don't remember exact hours...Noon-3 maybe?) for a few years earlier in the decade, like 2002-04 or so. I think she's currently on CBS' similarly formatted station in Sacramento so I assume she's going to voicetrack one market. She's very talented, I enjoyed her on FLZ.

Interested to see how this station plays (no pun intended, really) in Tampa. They're definitely entering a crowded field and 98.7 isn't the best signal. FLZ is an excellent radio station and Mix is pretty close formatically, so we'll see if Play can carve out a niche.

How does a station have blog posts before the station even existed? o_0

Probably they made the blog earlier before the station flipped?

Seriously Fuddsy-------how can this succeed? What exact niche is it filling unless you think MIX with no jocks is a niche. They are saying "The Best Music'------only missing is the word Mix. The signal sucks in Eastern Hillsborough in a car radio. I would have gone with Urban AC, but obviously this seemed like a play. I like the promos using words from upcoming songs. That is as lame as "Q in the City' for those familiar with Q92.9 in Pittsburgh. I would expect more from CBS and maybe it will get better. I don't see why they fired their staff. Announcers today are made to sound so "generic" that it would seem anybody could do any format except maybe BTLS doesn't do jazz or classical------but who knows. Classical is now a niche market too. They need some crazy comic lady to go up against Nancy Alexander--------------------HMMMMMMMMMMM? I got an idea.

I wonder if CBS will have the same early success with this strategy in Tampa as they are having in Sacramento? How weak is the signal?

Play 98.7's signal is about half of what Mix 100.7 is. I can pick up Mix 100.7 all the way from Orlando, but not Play 98.7 at all because of WMMO 98.9 here.

I kind of liked their launch, mainly because it "deleted" 93.3 & 100.7. Reminiscent of Power 93 VS Q 105, but to a much lighter & legal extent.

Sad to see another Smooth Jazz station go away, but excited about the competition. CBS Radio just made it interesting for Clear Channel.

Both WSJT 98.7 and sister station WYUU 92.5 are 50,000 watts, but really hits them both are two things; one they are not centrally located (their tower is in extreme western Pinellas county near Indian Shores, so a good portion of the signal goes out over the Gulf of Mexico) and they are on a short stick, I believe it's about 470 feet, but due to spacing requirements, the location WSJT is in, is pretty much where they're stuck, any move more than 2 miles away, they would have to reduce power or go with a shorter stick and even then, they probably wouldn't be able to move more than maybe 10 miles max; again due to spacing issues; the FM band is west central Florida and S.W. Florida is pretty congested.

WSJT serves all of Pinellas county with a strong signal (St. Petersburg, St. Pete Beach, Clearwater, Largo, Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Shores, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor, Tarpon Spings etc...... but across the bay in Hillsborough county (Tampa, Carrollwood, Plant City, Brandon, Temple Terrace etc); they only reach the western third of the county with a decent signal. They also do send a decent signal to extreme n.w. Manatee county (Holmes Beach, Ana Maria, Palmetto) and the s.w. quandrant of Pasco county. (Holiday and New Port Richey). (WSJT was orginally licensed - and still is to Holmes Beach in Manatee county and originally just served that area plus Palmetto, Bradenton and Sarasota, with a 3,000 watt signal; the upgrade they obtained is about all they can do with that frequency........unless CBS buys out some other stations and takes them off the air.

WINK-FM is working down in Ft Myers - they even have #2 in F18-34 in am drive. CBS should look at them for inspiration.
