In case anybody is curious...NHL Stanley Cup Play-offs (from Westwood One) are being carried by:
  • WPHY, 920AM, Trenton
  • WFAN, 660AM, New York
Note: CBS owns a controlling interest in Westwood One. CBS Radio manages Westwood One. CBS Radio owns and operates sports stations in eight markets (including WIP, Philadelphia). Only two of these (WFAN, New York and WXYT, Detroit) are carrying WON's Stanley Cup coverage. One, KHTK, Sacramento, is taking NBA coverage from ESPN instead. So much for corporate synergy.NBA Play-offs (from ESPN Radio) are being carried by:
  • WKXW, 1450AM, Atlantic City
  • WEPN, 1050AM, New York
  • WIOV, 1240AM, Reading
Note: These same stations, plus WTKZ, 1320AM, Allentown, also carry ESPN Radio's Major League Baseball broadcasts. ABC/Disney owns ESPN Radio. ABC Radio (still) owns five sports stations, four of which (all except Los Angeles) are taking ESPN Radio's NBA coverage. The World Cup games are not being broadcast on terrestrial radio in the US. XM Radio carries the World Cup and games from some foreign broadcasters are being streamed online.

I don't understand why don't the Philly radio stations don't carry more play by play sports from Westwood one and ESPN radio. It's a shame we can't hear these games in our market on Philly radio stations.

While I can understand SOME sports being broadcast successfully on the radio...Phillies and such...the one that escapes me being broadcast on radio is NASCAR racing as on XTU!43 cars, chasing each other, slamming, banging and crashing. How the heck do you do justice to a mile and more of metal moving at nearly 200 MPH? ???

Julius, you often say play-off games SHOULD be carried on the radio in the number six market, or play-off games SHOULD be carried here as they in EVERY other market. For the record, here is what other major markets are carrying the play-offs:NEW YORK NBA NHLLOS ANGELES --- NHLCHICAGO NBA ---SAN FRANCISCO --- ---DALLAS-FT. WORTH NBA ---PHILADELPHIA --- ---HOUSTON-GALVESTON --- ---WASHINGTON, DC NBA NHLDETROIT --- NHLATLANTA NBA NHL

The Mavericks are in the NBA Finals. That may account for Dallas carrying the NBA finals. Chances are they'd still be carrying the finals on their ESPN affiliate, since it also happens to be the flagship for Mavs radio.

Oh god...here we go again with Mr. May complaining about why stations aren't airing certain playoff sports events. We've been through all this before. Why re-hash the same crap again? Julius, if you are that concerned about listening to NBA or NHL playoff games, get an XM radio. Subscribing to ESPN playoff coverage won't cost your mother that much money. Another contributor said it was around $13 a month.Fred: I found your original post to be informative, letting us know who was carrying NBA and NHL playoff coverage. Thanks for that. However, it opened the flood gates for Julius to complain about the same thing that he whined about last year during playoff time.

We can't afford it, our family is not rich. We barley making it now with what money we have because of so many bills my mom has to pay plus Westwood One don't allow XM or SIRIUS to air many of their national play by play sports broadcasts on those services. All I ask is that the radio stations in Philadelphia to please do a better job in clearing all national play by play sports broadcasts ESPN/Westwood One on stations WE CAN GET on our radios so we can hear it, not out of town ones like WPHY 920, WFAN 660, etc, . A top 10 market should be able to do something like that.

Shawn, looks like you are right. I had hoped to head off the question of who would carry the play-offs and also head off the arguement that EVERY other market has the play-offs on the radio. Guess it didn't work.Just from taking a look at the ESPN and WWI websites' affiliate lists, it looks like national play by play, like the Oldies and Standards formats (another topic of recurring complaint), are being relegated to small town radio - apparently because small market stations can still sell time to local businesses and merchants. Ironically, play-off broadcasts are more likely to be heard in market 206 than in market 6.That said, I think a part of the problem is most radio play by play today is terrible. It's sports talk with a ballgame in the background.

Fred/Mike: this just proves the point I have made to the Radio-Info Powers That Be in the recent past. Julius posts just for the sake of posting, but I'm the problem in the eyes of some who visit this site. I'm trying to put a stop to this silly nonsense, but, in some people's opinion, I'm the one who is the problem. You provided information that was useful, but yet Julius STILL complains...but I'm the bad guy. Go figure.

Shawn, silly nonsense is in the eye of the beholder. Many people here have their pet peeves and hot button issues: Play by play sports. Stations dropping oldies. Stations dropping standards. Danz music. Rock versus hip-hop. Progressive talk radio. Indecency rules. Howard. RJ. "Hate speech" on urban talk radio. A given radio station. Shaw's supermarket. ... The list is endless. Nobody has to read anything in which they are not interested. It's easy to skip a post or thread. I have topics on which I get hung up. I ask people to indulge me as I am willing to indulge them. Julius has never posted a mean or unkind word. He takes people's comments to him and about him with good grace. I'm prepared to cut him some slack.

Now I know that the sport is not that popular here in the states, but I'm a little upset that there is no terrestrial coverage of the World Cup on the radio. Yes, I know that XM is carrying it, but, at this point, paying for it is not an option. In addition the BBC was able to get full rights to broadcast all the games in the UK for "free" over their stations (however they are blocking them on the internet for overseas listeners).Such a shame that ESPN can get the TV priveleges, but won't put the matches on ESPN Radio. Sometimes I think that ESPN Radio is just a joke. But that's my 2 cents, thanks for letting me rant.
