Doesn't every major metropolitan area have a KYW or NJ101.5? It would seem that every market that has an XM traffic channel already has a decent and authoritive local station for it.
______________

Baltimore is the exception to that rule I'm most familiar with. WBAL starts sports at 6 and there's no traffic reports after that time. It would be nice if Baltimore traffic cleared up then, but it doesn't, especially on Friday nights. Also, WBAL doesn't do traffic weekends or middays. XM is your only choice.

There are a number of cities that have XM traffic channels but no all-news outlet: Baltimore, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Minneapolis, San Diego, Atlanta, Tampa, Phoenix, Orlando, and Miami. I'm not familiar with these cities so I don't know whether the stations there are full-service (like NJ101.5) or no-service (like WBAL).

Other than Philadelphia, DC, Chicago, New York, Boston, and LA, you don't find traffic on a regular basis outside of rush hour.

The All News stations in the US are:

WCBS/WINS New York
KNX/KFWB Los Angeles
KYW Philadelphia
WTOP Washington
WBBM Chicago
WBZ Boston (6a - 7p)
Infinity also has one in Detroit but the calls escape me.

Pretty much all of these get their traffic from Metro/Shadow.

Outside of those markets you get part time Metro flunkies or part time Traffic Pulse flunkies, or if you're listening to a Clear Channel station you get someone two states away reading traffic incidents off of your state's department of transportation web page into Prophet, maybe at the top and bottom of the hour outside of drive time if you're lucky.
______________

Re: Traffic

WIBC here in Indianapolis is also an exception. Traffic is done from 5am to 8pm 5 days a week every 15 minutes. Neither XM or Sirius has traffic for Indy yet and prob. never will.

Re: Traffic channels

My guess is that its because Traffic Pulse currently only services the cities that are on. But according to their website, they plan to add more cities in the upcoming months..so hopefully that will in effect get to XM.

Re: discovery canceled??

The best way to clear some bandwidth yet provide all the traffic and weather channels would be to find a way to persuade the commission to reverse that horrible decision on not allowing the terrestrial repeaters to provide local content. Clearly, that rule does not benefit the American public.
______________

No, because if traffic were only on the repeaters, it would become a pretty useless service. There are too many areas that aren't yet covered by repeaters, especially on the outskirts of cities.

Besides, the bandwidth used by the traffic channels could only be used for a couple music channels. It's not a huge amount.

You could be right, but do folks in Chicago care about the traffic jams in Miami, and do people in Chicago want to hear an MLB game between New York and Miami?
______________

I agree somewhat on traffic channels, but I think (even though I'm not a sports fan) that there could be people who live in Chicago now that used to live in NY or Miami and want to hear that game.
