Playing both edited and unedited versions of same song

I figured this would be the best area to post this question of mine, because I know it's obviously something to do with the FCC and their policy. But why do stations play BOTH versions of the same song, edited and unedited?

For example, "Jet Airliner" by the Steve Miller Band. The line "funky s**t goin' down in the city" is replaced with "funky kicks goin' down in the city"?

Or the Eagles' "Life in the Fast Lane", and the line "haven't seen a God-D**n thing". They either cut out "God" or just play the whole thing.

I would think a station would decide which one they will play, but what would be the reason for playing both versions interchangeably?

The only thing I can reflect on, is that at one station I worked, we played the edited version of songs (with what we thought were red flags to our smaller market) prior to 10:pm and let the ediger language go in the late and overnight hours.. Most stations I worked for, we just played our 'created' edits (We actually had a 'duck call' in place of 'havn't seen a G.D. thing'...When Henley said "G.D." in that Eagles hits....
