playing picky, picky with KHJZ...

My buddy and I listen to KHJZ overnight at work, and I heard one of my all time favorites "How Much I Feel" by Ambrosia. However, I was disappointed to hear it was the edited version. If the "music" part is the most important part of being a smooth jazz station, you have to play the LP version of that song, because the only thing you hear on the edit is the vocal track.

However, with that being said, thanks for playing such a great song.

Gotta love Ambrosia....edits of songs realy suck! Ever hear the edited version of "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc? It's brutal.

I think there was more splicing tape than audio tape on the reel by the time they were done with that one. Ugh.
______________

Biggest edit groaner for me on KHJZ: They will play Dave Brubeck's "Take Five", but it is also an edited version, leaving out the nice Joe Morello drum passage. Two very obvious edits in the tune if you listen carefully. Guess you could call it "Take Three and a Half."

Edited versions of long songs MY RANT

For the past year or so I've heard shortened versions of "Age of Aquarius" and "American Pie" on KLDE. These are not "Officially Short" (7" single) versions like the ones for "Light My Fire" or "Crimson and Clover" which sound clean because they were approved by the record producer, but POORLY done edits perpetrated at the station (perhaps?).

These shortened versions are usually played, not to make space for more songs, oh no. it's to make space for . . . you guessed it: MORE ADS! RAWR! >_<

Anyway, I will always prefer the Full Length versions. I mean: doesn't the multi-guitar solos of "Crimson and Clover" send you tripping? Doesn't that amazing keyboard solo in "Light My Fire" light YOUR fire? ;-D

The Aquarius and American Pie edits came from TM Century who probably dubbed them from a 45. TM Century claims to always use official single edits where available. I know I've played the same American Pie edit at a bunch of stations in the past 10 years, but I think all of them played it off the Gold Disc.

The worst TM Gold Disc version I ever played was CCR's "Bad Moon Rising" when they first came out with the No Noise Gold Disc 3's. When they cleaned up the hiss, they also stripped out some of the instruments, and Fogerty's voice didn't sound right. The station I was at pulled the disc and went back to the original. Sure the song has a lot of tape hiss - but that's the way we've always heard it.

When Century 21 first came out with the Gold Disc libraries, they were dubbed from Bud Buschardt's record collection... and if there's anyone who would insist on the proper single and know how to find it, it's Bud.

Which can be heard in its entirety on KLDE... and does indeed kick ass...

I've never heard any tape hiss on "Bad Moon Rising" or any classic rock song for that matter, but then I'm busy "assimilating" the music. :D

"VEWY INTEWESTIN' "

Forgive my shameless ignorance, but why did C21 copy a private collection rather than get the master tapes?

Thanks for the info.

The flippant answer is ask Dave Scott, it was his company.

Reality: Century 21 (now TM Century) was a jingle house, not a record company. They embarked on a project to assemble CD music libraires of every format just as CDs themselves were being introduced. If they were to wait for people to let them use master tapes, they'd probably still be trying to get the first library out the door today.
______________

Re: Edited versions of long songs MY RANT

What I also dislike are the edited songs in which "bad" words are excised. This wasn't always so - I remember when Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner" had the line about the "funky $hit". In fact, when my kids were little (1990s) we were in the Austin area, my wife was in a store, and I was in the car with the kids listening to KLBJ. On the radio came Radiohead's "Creep", and it wasn't the censored version, if you know what I mean. Corporate radio, and the FCC have given us mediocrity.
