Playing too many old songs

I've noticed that WDHT HOT 102.9 here in Dayton,OH plays too many reccurrents. I was wondering if more Rhythmic stations have been doing this recently? I think radio has become very stale.

i know what you mean, thier sister station here in columbus does the same thing, both owned by Radio One, maybe a formula of theirs, who knows. My xm gets alot of use since i moved here or listening to bigger stations online like from detroit and st louis, owned by clear channel but they seem to do a better job with the urban format to me.

Whatever their ratio of current/recurrent/gold, it seems to be working. They had a big winter book and didn't they have another increase in phase I of the Spring Book?

Geez what is so wrong with spreading out the music a little more. If I listen to any station on a constant basis, I begin to notice what their recurrents are. (Most stations have very short recurrent list) Having a more variey of recurrents spreads out the music nicely. (IF) It is done correctly.

I think maybe it's because the newer music is such bland, cookie-cutter crap. I've been tuning into college stations again to hear some of the better unsigned hip-hop & rap artists, it's getting to be much better.

Not really, there are some good songs out right now.

It's probably just their specific market. Some stations play recurrents a lot just to increase their actual liking of the station. For example, the market could not be suited for Why You Wanna (in this case it is but just for example), but the market is in love with Soul Survivor, so the station uses the "cheap" way out and instead of replacing it with a completely new song, they use a huge recurrent just to be safe.

Another reason could be that the station's audience likes recurrents. If you think YOUR station is recurrent heavy, look at Toledo's WVKS CHR/Pop. They have Gold Digger still in their top 10, and My Humps, Run It, Walk Away, Luxurious, Be Without You, Scars, Don't Cha, and countless other recurrents in their top 30. Well, maybe those songs are really loved by their audience and the new songs out right now just aren't. This especially goes for dance-leaning rhythmics--instead of using something like Chamillionaire's "Ridin", they'll use Snoop Dogg's "Drop It Like It's Hot" just because...it has a crazy beat that their station is suited best for.

I hope I didn't make you feel dumb if you already knew this...JM2C.

No i don't feel dumb I'm actually glad you told me this THANKS :)

More times than not it seems that Recurrent-based stations tend to do better, especially female-targeted stations. Familiarity is a big part of the game, and unless your core artists are releasing GREAT new music, sometimes recurrent is the best way to go.

Just my opinion.
