You do realize that you just said that it is better not to consult with listeners about what they want?

I can certainly afford to buy sat radio but I don't. I don't listen to sat because it is too narrow. I don't like a solid stream of Doo Wop, Elvis, girl groups or music of just one decade. I like variety and in my experience the sat broadcasters went the opposite way.

You just gotta switch channels once in awhile, Tuna.
 
Program an iPod with exactly what you want on it. Works for me.

Not an iPod but between the flash stick, mini player and Audio DVD's I have plenty of music to keep me company. Only problem is.....no personalities to tie them all together - the very thing radio used to provide. :(

I agree that radio doesn't provide personalities anymore that's why I listen to old airchecks. Sadly personality radio is gone.
