Well...how could you play songs with certain 4 letter words, when the FCC will fine up to $325,000 for letting them get on the air?

That's a good question. Technically and in compliance with FCC standards, certain words can be aired if they are used as an exclamation and not used to describe a bodily function or carnal act. Having said that however, stations will almost always exclude those words altogether based on community standards and to attract the widest possible audience.

In todays PPM environment, songs that irritate any segment of the audience can be seen to be tune-outs and very toxic, so lists may even get shorter.

PPM doesn't make people tune out songs. People have always punched out when they hear a song they don't know or don't like. The only thing that has changed is that PPM will now punish you when you do something that sends the audience running for the hills.

While everyone in town loves to talk about how PPM has "changed" how radio is done, the reality is that listener habits haven't changed a bit. We're just now getting a better look at how the audience is actually behaving.
