Please Atlanta give us back our OLDIES

I cannot for the life of me understand WHY a city this huge cannot have an oldies station.
After COOL 105.7 went off the air, us oldies fans, and I know that their are many, have no where to turn to for oldies.
Yes, if you live in the far Northern burbs you can get Sunny 100.1, or even 102.9, which are both excellent stations.
But, I live in Virginia Highlands and obviously cannot get that signal on a regular basis.
I would even be happy if 680 AM went all oldies, their rating's could not be much worse anyway, plus they have a big signal that is very clear in town even at night. Most big cities have an oldies format, but no, not Atlanta.
Our radio dial SUCKS>>>>>>>>..........I at least wish DAVE FM would go to JACK, that is a much better format.
What do you all think?
Edited by BIGSTICK on 09/21/05 04:14 PM.

Obviously, this poster is on crack. Sunny 100.1 is the most listened to station in Atlanta. In fact, the reason Cool and Fox went under is because of Sunny's awesome dominance in the market.

I beg to differ. Granted, Sunny 100 is the most listened to station AT HOME...I don't think anyone on this board would dispute that. But B98 has consistently been voted the most listened to station, AT WORK. Don't you read the polls?

Re: Here is how to get Oldies

I know this isn't what you want to hear but both XM and Sirius offer Oldies.
Trust me, it is worth a few dollars a month.

Assuming your query is not rhetorical, I'll attempt to answer your question.

The core demo for the Oldies format has eroded steadily, and has become unattractive for advertisers.

A person who was a teenager in the 1950's or 1960's is now in his or her late 50's or early 60's. This is far beyond the 25-34, or 25-44 listener who is likely to be at his or her peak earning capacity, wealth, and discretionary income. Since the Oldies demo is unattractive to advertisers, there are fewer sales, less revenue, and less profit for the owner of the Oldies station.

For this reason, major market stations in Detroit, New York, and Atlanta have recently dropped the Oldies format, in favor of younger skewing formats which are far more likely to maximize revenue and profit margins.

I know they do, and I have XM. But, I still wish we had a local format.
1160 AM is about the closet to an oldies format, but the sugnal is still horrendous. It could be 100k on AM and probably still be atrocious.

And why do people on this board jump down everyone's throat? I think that the programers in Atlanta are on crack. I definitely think that money can be made with a good signal AM oldies format--Dallas, TX has one at 1160.

While it's not a fulltime oldies station, 94.9 Lite-FM picked up a good part of Cool's playlist when Randy & Spiff moved over. That's probably the best you're going to do.

Ok don't go off on me but why would a Jack-Fm format not work in atlanta? there is 4 Million People in atlanta somebody is gonna listen.

Then who cares? You have XM, you have your oldies. Ding ding. A local format won't make it better.

> And why do people on this board jump down everyone's throat?

Because people who post on this board do it in a very confrontational way, so as far as I'm concerned they're asking for it. You can't post an angry comment and then act victimized when you're getting a rebuttal.

1160 & 1190 are oldies in Dallas. Additionally, there is a standards format @ 770.

>>Well lets make this statement:
The Oldies format that I think would work, would be a diet of 70s and 80s, and not just the usual 500 that cool played. When Lake 102 left the air, they were
sounding better than they ever had. They had dropped those sappy, and ugly 50s
and the sixties, were so few, that it had a great all 70s sound. I know that cool only played a handful of 70s, because I played them, so I know. I also must add that atlanta needs an oldies outlet, but not one that old geezers would listen to, just an oldies station geared towards the demo from 40 and up
to about 55. I understand its a very narrow gap, but this would work.
Just a thought, Had to let my feelings show.
______________

I think you should get XM or Sirius...seriously. Then, you can listen to any format you want, whenever you want. As for Dave going Jack? Check NYC trends to see how well the Jack format is doing in the Big Apple.

I never have bought this idea that you can't sell the oldies format or any format for that matter. You can sell any format if you have creative, hard working management and sales people. If your definition of sales is to sit in the office and wait on the agencies to call in their schedules, no you can't sell it. Priced right and pitched to the right businesses you can sell it. Are you going to make a boat load of money. No. Will you make money, yes. The vast majority of businesses in the ATL area have been priced out of advertising anywhere. Fairly priced (not dollar a holler and not the $1500-$2000 some stations reportedly get)with creative people with a strong commitment to customer service pitced right you have a viable product.

Because it doesn't work anywhere. Can you say "80s" formats? It's an over-researched "radio-in-a-box" format that by trying to appeal to everyone, appeals to no one. 10% of a total audience is great cume. Jack formats are getting less than 4% in some markets.

Soon...and who knows when; could be five years, could be more...FM radio is simply going to adapt like AM had to in the late 80s. Satellite offers choice, it offers instant gratification and music to whet any appetite. There's simply no way for FM music formats to stay competitively profitable against cable, internet, iPod and satellite radio.

The big broadcast companies will have to simply become format networks, carrying syndicated (probably regionally) programming throughout several markets...which means lots of board-ops, each moitoring multiple stations and the commercial logs...and a lot less jocks.
