Please explain the "embargo' on ratings.

Is there really an embargo on ratings . If so, for how long and is it by the stations or by Arbitron.
People I work with say there is no such thing, yet others in radio say there is one.
If there is one, how did the providence journal get the numbers, in a recent article.
By the way, while posting I was wondering if somehow this turns into a fight about Buddy Cianci! yuk yuk..

There is an embargo and it's book by book. Arbitron can impose it or stations can request it. In a nutshell it's to prevent non subscribers from quoting numbers to sell time. If The Journal quoted numbers they had to be numbers from a book that wasn't embargoed. The major players subscribe so if anyone is trying to sell numbers they didn't pay for it's anyone's guess as to who it is but someone once suggested the Latino stations may be the reason. Now that there are three who knows how long this will last?

This is a great question.
Moonstruck, I'm confused on this also. When the book comes out in January if there is an
embargo, does that mean the P.D.s at 790 or 630 or 920 am can't tell anyone else the
numbers? Could you or anyone please explain a little futher?
thanks, ryan

With an Embargo and I want to advertise in radio and I want to know whos got the most listeners how would I find out who has better numbers?Showing ratings to a potential advertiser that your station has alot of listeners is a huge selling piont.
This is so stupid.

It really is dumb. I have always felt that embargos are caused by underperforming stations that don't want anyone to know how bad they are doing.

Ken ,Sky, so WPRO spends 20,000 on Arbitron and can't say Johnny D had a 4.0
Buddy had a 5.0 and Dan had a whatever? Why, because WHJJ gets a 1.0 ?
Don't you get ratings to show ratings? I don't understand this, now, more than ever.

The embargo is placed on making the numbers public by means such as All Access, and other public websites dealing with the media. Stations who subscribe to the services have full access to them and can use them to sell and show to clients and potential clients. Media outlets like the Pro-Jo can get the numbers through Pd's, Ad agencys, etc.

Seekonk Sally, that makes good sense. So if you know a host , P.D or G.M. they can tell you the numbers of whatever they have. Sounds good. Thats means we will know how the Jan book looks! good.

thanks, ryan

People here arn't going to know Jack Squat. P.D's and G.M's hate this board as it is. This place gives the common man a soap box to say whatever they want. Management hates that. They don't like their station being critiqued. So they sure the hell arn't going to do us any favors.

But if you want to know the ratings, it's not difficult to call each station and act like you are interested in advertising. Then simply ask for the numbers. It probably wouldn't take more than 2 hours to get them all.

John..that is why I like you sometimes; but you being on the outside, sometimes you don't know.

And don't think by calling in and asking for the numbers you'll get the numbers the STATION feels is important to you & your situation (and depending upon the station, it could be totally different demos).
