PLEASE UPDATE KEVIN MILLER

Hello Pittsburgh, (Channel 4 Loves You) circa 1980's

I just wanted to check on Kevin Miller (KDKA Radio). Has he gotten better? (or worse? :'( ) Is he playing nice with the other employees?

Thank you,
Stuart
Chapel Hill, North Carolina

I saw him on MSNBC the other day doing Hardball and playing the typical "Bush can do no wrong" guy...oh, and still fat, although I thought he was doing some program to get healthy, maybe the bacon/donut diet.

I have no knowledge of Kevin Miller's status, only to say that if he was on Hardball I would find that somewhat impressive but also disapointing as I would much rather watch Monica Crowley.

I know, I know. The news is not for lusting. But I can't help myself! ;D

No, what I want to talk about is the "Hello Pittsburgh! Channel 4 Loves You" Jingle- which is still quite memorable all these years later.

At the time it was out, I was an elementary school student at Linden in Pt. Breeze. Every year Linden does a performance where the students study Pittsburgh and put on a play about the city. I'm told they still do it.

To show you what an impact that jingle had- we actually sang it in our play (amended lyric being "Hello Pittsburgh- Linden School Loves You").

By the way, the jingle wasn't exclusive to Pittsburgh (unfortunately). I moved to Western North Carolina for a year- and the Greenville, South Carolina TV station (also Channel 4, featuring future US Congressman J.D. Hayworth doing sports) used it with "Hello Piedmont! Your Friend Four Loves You!" being the lyric.

The jingle was so effective there it served as the pathway for the station to change their call letters from WFBC to WYFF (We're Your Friend Four).

Doesn't matter. As far as I'm concerned, WYFF in Greenville is a den of theives!!!!

Stuart,

Take him back...

I thought he was 'alright' (just like any other Rush Limbaugh rip off) until during a big storm here in Pittsburgh and the city was without power for a couple hours and only an hour after the storm he insulted our power utility workers for not getting the electric on fast enough. He then ripped on the city officials and the city for not doing enough after the power was out for an hour. In fact, in regards to the power workers he said something to the fact as ' those lazy bums.' I think his attitude shows how ignorant of a man this is. If you are going to be a talk show host in a city you are not naturally from, then show some respect to the blue collar workers who are working their best to get the power back on. I am sure he can manage an hour without his microwave oven.

I think it is pathetic when Marty Griffin tries to be cool by speaking slang. Marty, I've seen you on T.V. You are not a young, urban street kid. You are a grown man. Stop trying to be cool. You sound ridiculous.

Well, I guess it is true about Kevin, he seems to "bomb" wherever he goes. He had lost close to 100 pounds, I am sorry he is putting it back on. As for "Bush can do no wrong", as a huge Republican, I will leave that comment alone ;)

For you Pratte,...

"Makes no difference where I go, you're the best home town I know, Hello Pittsburgh, Hello Pittsburgh, Channel 4 loves you" ;D

Thanks for the update,

Stu

The Channel 4 promo was actually done by an outfit in Nashville who did versions of it for at least half a dozen stations around the country. WTAE's was far and way the best of that bunch but it was not exclusive. I am just sitting here thinking about the people who were in the spots in the first year of that promotion who are not with us anymore. Pappy Long and Al McDowell just to name two.

KDKA radio's "Someplace Special" was home grown and maybe the best radio promtion of my generation.

Kevin Miller is just another Rush wannabe. I thought he might be interesting but after a couple of months I can see they hired him because he worked cheap and fit the format.
