PLJ's Format Flip

Seeing the initial positive buzz around "Pulse 87", maybe they should try and cut a deal for the intellectual property and move Pulse to 95.5. There certainly seems to be a market for a more current focused dance oriented station in NYC. Or they could simply "steal" the format and go head to head with Pulse. They would easily win with the much much better signal. A dance based CHR format like that would be my top pick.

Other possibilities for 95.5 in my mind would be mainstream CHR, News/Talk (maybe putting WABC on FM), Adult Hits (Jack FM type format), and possibly country.

remember: go country, but don't even breathe the C WORD on the air or in promos---citadel and 'plj can pull it off!!!!! Todays hot country can work in the ny market!

Those are all openings in the market, except maybe news/talk (I think it would be a waste to put it on FM), but I think overall they will choose something that is cheap and easy to run if they do decide to flip. I could see them doing country or something like smooth jazz with a skeleton staff, trying to cash in by being the only game in town in both cases and trying to squeeze more profit out of the stations by keeping costs down to a bare minimum. CHR would be an expensive venture, as would a dance station.

Jack is as about as low-maintenance as it gets, and is not much of a departure from the music they already play, so that might just be a possibility too...do I hear Bob or Mike FM? There certainly wouldn't be the same ill will towards the format that Jack had as a result of replacing CBS-FM, and Jack managed to get similar ratings, if not billing, to PLJ in its short time on the air. The only strike against it is that the Jack format is usually rock-based, but right now with the addition of RXP, it seems like 95.5 would just be getting into another bottom-feeding war for any leftover listeners. They could solve that by making the playlist more pop-oriented, however, avoiding the classic rock of Q104.3, the hair metal of 92.3 and some of the more eclectic stuff played on 101.9.

That would seem to be an easy way out for them...keep the music as similar a possible but cut out as many expenses as possible including most or all of the airstaff. That would certainly cut costs, but would be real unfortunate, as 95.5 has some very good and talented jocks on the air.

Time will tell, I guess.

Since PLJ seemed to be the property that worried Citadel the most, some flip is probably in the works. Hot Country without calling it tht seems like a good bet.

Such a country station could work here. I thought it might have bode well for 92.3 to go that route. Read my "Open Letter to Dan Mason" with random thoughts on how a country format would have been a good idea for 92.3.

WPLJ is Judy Ellis' favorite radio station. Scott & Todd are Judy's favorite morning show. That is the equivilant of a research project in Citadel's world :-X. PLJ isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

The Miller Kaplan (sales revenue) isn't nearly as ugly as the ratings side of it.

Country does just make too much sense (which is why it won't happen) :'(. Take PLJ and KLOS (in LA) and fire up the Toby Keith records you have yourself two wins.

As far as 'The Pulse', well Citadel could revive that ever so successful 'Diva' format ::). Again, a Judy favorite.

Hmmmm....Judy Ellis....I hear from some friends that work there that they've never spotted her on the 17th floor of 2 Penn Plaza. Does she really have any input in running Citadel???

I hate to say it because Country would be fun, but it's also expensive. You have to market the crap out of it, and to do it right, you really need to hire some great air talent who should be live and doing phones - and, you need a big morning show in order to make a dent. Sadly, I think Citadel's primary goal right now is to cut costs.

Sorry to say, I think jazz is much more likely. You can run it out of a broom closet, and it can be tracked from out-of-market. Buy the intellectual property of CD101-9 from Emmis and call it CD95-5. It's the safest decision you can make, considering CD101-9 wasn't doing so horribly when they blew it up. It was doin' better than 'PLJ.

The only other cost-effective option would be to have WPLJ go to a simulcast of WABC. FM/AM simulcasts have happened in a few markets and in some cases have been successful - I don't know how much billing they bring in but I bet they sure slash costs to the bone!!

Jazz didnt work on 101.9 and its as dead as standards radio is in any market,JAZZ 95.5 sounds very unlikely and
its not going to happen.I see any format except jazz.Jazz even scored low at sirius and xm when surveyed.
???

Driving home from work last night right before the 7PM hour, I heard Race Taylor ending his show by saying something like "...we'll see you tomorrow at 3:00, granted the 'big meeting' goes well tomorrow."

What "big meeting" is he referring to? Possibly a meeting with the air staff to inform them of the pending format change?

Wouldn't the cheapest thing be to leave 'PLJ alone and just budget-cut the crud out of it?

Hot AC doesn't pull great numbers, but it can bill very very well.

Hmm, so maybe THAT'S why ABCitadel's been holding onto those WZZN calls in Chicago all this time! ???

What if they went oldies - deeper, older cuts than WCBS... 50s-70s... u think that would work for them?

No. Most NY buys are agency, and agencies buy little, if any, listeners over 55. That is why CBS morphed into a 70's station.
