PLJ's Format Flip

Either Citadel or CBS would do country this as Clear Channel has Country already on WKTU HD2. Both Citadel and CBS do great with the country format. Also if that does happen would Clear Channel put Country on WKTU HD 1 and drop the Rhythmic format?

As for Citadel their isn't really any other format they would put on 95.5. They could just tweak it and go pop. This as on their homepage the top bar on the Internet Explorer it says "Hit Music" which is the last thing on the hompage top bar name. How about a B 95 "95 plus 5 mins commerical free of Hit Music" "New York City's Hit Music - The Most Hit Music Period" Just thought I would have some fun, lol :D

Take it for what it's worth but while listening to Scott and Todd Monday Todd said he was leaving for a convention in Nashville. I believe there is a country radio convention in Nashville this week. Could be something....could be nothing. Folks can make jokes all they want, but Citadel does Country and does it well. Contrary to public opinion it is not a format about hicks and rednecks. I think you'd be rather surprised as to the economic bracket that they come from. It's about going where the money is, and in this economy you would go where the listeners have it.....country is that format. Self promoting, good with men and women.....we shall see.

There's nothing to see. Country is redneck and right wing. Both don't sell in New York!
Enough already...

Many people who enjoy Classic Rock also enjoy Country. Today's country is, in fact, similar. Country would do well in NYC.

WKTU HD 1 = 103.5 FM. As much as it would be interesting to see one country station in the market, envisioning two of them would be erratic. Let's wait until we get one on the board first.

Then how does that explain talk radio in New York?

I know. Thats werid as I am typing this I have on Fresh 102.7 online stream and they are playing a country song "Lonestar" - I'm Already There. And sure this song fits well on a AC station like FRESH.

Here we go again with out of towners claiming that country would work in NY.

As has been discussed at naseum, WABC's ratings are baffling in such a heavily democratic city. Although most probably live outside the 5 boroughs.

Country radio hasn't worked in New York for years and is a hard sell which is the primary reason. It would be hard for it to pull in more than a 1.5. If there were such a huge market why wouldn't a floundering suburban station pick up the format? Country didn't even work on Long Island when tried on WBAZ 6 years ago.
Country stations in LA and SF struggle to make it out of the 1.0's and Chicago's country station is currently in decline. Why would any one take a chance on a risky format in market no. 1?

Well...it IS tied for fifth in Philly....

In San Fransico Entercom just put country on 95.7 The Wolf last year sometime. Look at Baltimore's country station 93.1 WPOC. They are right behind 101.9 Lite-FM and Balitmore is in the Mid Atlantic. It just might work in New York City. The last country station was on the air in NYC how long ago? Its 2008 it may or may not work. WPLJ would be a good place to put it as Fresh is taking some of their listerens.

Philly and NYC, despite the geographical proximity, are two VERY different radio markets.

Baltimore is completely different from NYC, and is becoming increasingly different from nearby Washington DC as well. For example, the Hispanic population in DC is much larger then that of Baltimore, and it's even bigger in metro NYC. Second, Baltimore's city population keeps dwindling (at one point it had nearly a million people living in it). New York City's population keeps growing, and is about 14-15 times bigger.
I will say this though, throughout much of the 90s Boston was one of only a few markets nationally that didnt have a Country station on the dial. Nowadays it does, and it appears to be doing pretty well. Then again, metro NYC is one of the most unique markets in the world, and is much more international/global then any other US city. That's one of the main reasons Country isn't seen as a format that's likely to succeed in this market.

i heard todd also mention that he was going to nashville. Country believe it or not is big outside NY and PLJ was playing some country on their station too. It can be big since there is no country right now.

Well, I guess they're equivalent to the old-time WABC fans whose 1976 preferences ran to the Bellamy Brothers over Boston.

Another odd thing is their argument that today's country is no longer the "cowboy with straw in mouth" stereotype--well, hel-LO, in a post-Brokeback era, said stereotype probably carries more hip credibility among New Yorkers...

I remember WLIE 102.5 , It did not last very long.

Scott Shannon was an a$#^#!! le He dissed so many people he thought were "beneath" him.

All comes around. Like all radio now......................................

does anyone care? It's scary.

Well, if WPLJ winds up simulcasting/replacing WABC, Shannon's probably got a golden parachute or soft landing of sorts (and then there's Hannity)

Truth is, he is a lot better than a lot of folks in the biz.

True, that would example why WMZQ isn't high in the ratings in Washington, D.C.

As for other peoples comments about advertisments. A country station would have advertisments from a lot of companies. Im sure Mc Donald's, other resturants, local car dealships, NY ads, JcPenny's, Sears, Macy's, etc. Their are some adveristers.

PLJ IS NOT FLIPPING! for the love of God if you want country, go buy an HD radio and listen to 97.5...They were the 6th highest billing station in NYC last time I checked. You have to be HIGH to think Citadel would change formats on something that rich in the funds.

Whats the call letters for 97.5 ? Im 10 miles from NYC and I dont get anything on that slot. Are you talking about WALK-FM or the jazz station out of philly?
