Oh my...who died?
I think all of the jocks have been in connecticut for their entire careers...Kinda sad if you think about it.
Never been heard past Stratford ....

That's a SMALL market PD mentallity.
Who cares how long you've been on it's just a stroke to the pd's ego. I know pd's in top 5 markets that have made stars out of people with ZERO radio experience. I'm not saying that is what plr should do here but come on...why not just ask for demo package and decide from there..I also know of jocks with 10 or more years experience that don't get it and sound awful. Who would you pick 10 years or natural tallent?

You don't need 3 yrs. experience to run PLRs' format.

A monkey could do it.

It's not rocket science.

It's just liner card reading, that was that song, this is this song, on CTs' so-called #1 rock station, 99-1PLR.

I agree with the others; if you’re interested in the gig, don’t worry about the three years experience requirement. Send your tape, if they like the way you sound, they can always train you on the board. That will take you all of one shift on air to conquer. (Maybe less)
MarcB, you seem to always have an excuse as to why you won’t/can’t try for a job. I remember the internship position with Charlie Profit, you failed your driving test. Well, go pass the damn thing and try again. Regardless of whether or not you have three years experience on air, send your demo to PLR and take a chance, roll the dice…
Not much love for PLR on the board, what gives? Personal experiences?
Caliv, I would love to hear a story or two of some of these “ZERO” experience people who became stars in top 5 markets. Would you be one of them? Also, I don’t buy your statement that if a jock spends his entire career in Ct. that it’s sad. Is it sad that Ethan Carey spent his entire career not only in Ct., but at I-95? There’s something to be said for job stability while raising a family. How about Mike Lapatino at PLR? He’s been at PLR for 20 (?) years while raising a family and becoming part of his community. It’s one thing to not have the talent to move to a bigger market, it’s another to choose to stay in a smaller market and make a career out of it.

I don't have anything against WPLR. I think they're a great station and do what they do very well. I don't think I would work there because it's not my favorite type of music. In terms of favorite music it's #3 putting it behind Hip-Hop/Reggaeton and Oldies/Disco.

For right now I'd be happy if I could land a job in market #173 at Jammmin' 107.7 in New London. That right now would be my dream radio job. I'd like to work there for a while and hopefully someday get good enough to move up to Market #50 and HOT 93.7 in Hartford. If it never happens, so be it.

WOW, from your mouth to Gods ears. Look what just appeared on Allaccess today.

Nights in Connecticut
Jammin 107.7 WWRX/New London, Connecticut is looking for an evening personality. CHR experience a must. High energy, lots of phones, appearances, and prep a must! You must be a team player, detail oriented, organized, computer literate, as the right candidate will also handle website content. Photshop experience a plus. If you’re ready to continue to win both in the streets and on the air, email your stuff now to [email protected]. No links or attachments over 3meg. Redwolf Broadcasting is an EEO

Please, no excuses....Send your demo as soon as possible. Good luck to you!!

Since you seem to have an in with the radio gods, how about hooking me up with a gig in Los Angeles or Miami. haha

Jordan...LOL That's funny....
How about getting me to replace Ryan Seacrest in ALL of his gigs.
CALIV....out
oh wait...not replacing him just gettin that money!
CALIV back IN

caliv, I'm with you..although, I don't think I'd have the energy to handle all his gigs...I'll just take mornings at KISS and leave E! , Idol and American Top 40 to you. How does that guy do it? Must suck down the redbulls like nobody's business.
Just wondering, anybody going send their demo to PLR?

Jordan....never was in...

How kind of you to split it with me...LOL
That is a lotta dedication...I bet he never said he wouldn't go for a gig cause gas was too expensive or he didn't have a drivers license...

Personally I would go for almost any gig if I was lookin...ESPICALLY if I had little or no experience. I have been on more than a few formats that I was not into musically however, I put my all into it.

I even took gigs as a board op or in promotions to get into a good thing and I have ZERO regrets and lots of awesome memories.

Caliv:

Don't you worry about the PLR jocks never being heard "past Stratford"....PLR is a 50,000 watt station which reaches FAR beyond Stratford with a heritage and reputation that belies it's "Market 110" status.

Additionally, Chaz has worked in Dallas, Texas, in California and also on Long Island. Mike Lapitino did some on air work in Boston and Pam Landry did some air work in New York City...those are hardly small markets. And they have all chosen to continue their careers at WPLR which, in the Spring 2006 Arbitron ratings was the number one rock station in the COUNTRY among Adults 25-54 and 12+.

There is something to be said for stability in an unstable industry....

PLR has a STONG standing in the Bridgeport market, in response to the "not being heard past Stratford" comment. The signal goes very well until you hit the norwalk area where the NYCs take over. By then the Fox has the Cox rock audience. They are constantly in the top 5 behind Star and Webe usually just above KC101, who does well in Bpt too. When the tower is 20 minutes from Bridgeport it helps.

NOT THE POINT...
I wasn't really saying that the signal only goes so far. I was more or less saying that the DJ's on PLR are MOSTLY CT natives who have little or no desire to ever expand their careers...Maybe they aren't tallented enough maybe it's being lazy maybe they are just content with always working at the good ol' 99-1.
I don't recall ever hearing about a PLR jock who landed a big major gig after a couple years in New Haven.
THIS is one of the reasons why I originally posted my comment about the job requesting a MIMIUM 3 years experience....WHY?
Why not take a little time to network with other pd's in the company and find a new kid out there who has potential to grow into something and give him a little time to polish his act and move up...
All you people ever do is bi**h about how DEAD the biz is...How NOBODY gives anybody a chance how much better you'd be than (insert PD or Jock name here).

Chaz working in Dallas Texas was NOT in the Dallas market...It was for a satellite network called Z-Rock.
Lappy and Landry did part time in major markets, and I would like to see proof that they were number one in the COUNTRY. LMAO! WMMR phila would kill em in a BAD book, Q 104.3 New York City has a smaller audience...
I'm not gonna go on and on but that is the dumbest thing I have EVER heard.
a station in a market this size can not and will not beat a station in a top 20 marked.

Are you saying this because in 12+ numbers they have a bigger number than a station in philly boston or new your city UM....smaller markets = smaller number of people which = smaller cume share and numbers.

Do you understand....
If johnny has an 8 share in a town with a population of 1,000
and Timmy has a 2.1 share in a town of 7,000,000,000 then guess what
TIMMY KICKS JOHNNY'S A##.....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Hey Caliv:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Hey Monkey,
Hope you know I'm not bashing you or PLR but, let's be serious...
They have people who have been in the market for YEARS...and YEARS. To me it's O-L-D!...
To some blue collar dude in the valley it's your old pal lappy.
You gotta be honest and admit that they have numbers because arbitron tends to send diary's to the same ol' same ol' that fill 'em out.
Honestly it's not because they are doing ANYTHING new and interesting...Just playing the same playlist and the same diner sfx at lunch and the same Pink Floyd VS (insert band here) for the same ol' 6 at 6....and the same ol' wig out...and ticked off Tuesday...I mean life is kinda boring and repetitive for most blue collar workers anyway...SHOULDN'T their radio be interesting...

One person's boring and repetitive is another's heritage and consistency...PLR may be boring to you but the fact that they have always been a rock station and have had the same personalities for many years is a good thing for a lot of people...and not just the ones you label "blue collar". Fact is PLR is the number one station in New Haven so someone is listening.

And Arbitron does not send the same people diaries over and over by the way.

radio monkey said:

actually, they do. there is a limited number of people (households) that agree to fill out diaries (that even answer their phone) that Arbitron will go back to the same people over and over. Also, they will ask - "How many (insert demo here) live in your household?" You can answer any reasonable #, and they will send out that number of diaries...no proof necessary. Sure! There are 4 women btwn he ages of 18-34 that live in my household...then you fill out all four for your favorite station.

Bigmax:

Not exactly true. Arbitron does not duplicate households. Also when a household is selected, they ask how many people over the age of 12 live in the household...they don't ask for specific age groups/sex.

Arbitron is far from perfect....no one disagrees with that. But it is as imperfect for one station as it is for another.

The diaries returned in a given market are "weighted" for age/sex/ethnic group as per the market's population to avoid oversampling/undersampling in any market. Still not perfect but not as out of control as you might think.

Hi Whale...
I don't get the joke.... ???
Anyway, isn't it time to flip this topic to DX'ing or something like that.
Did you know that one time in band camp I picked up the Loop am 1000 from chicago on my flute.
It was AWESOME.
hahahahaha
I think this topic is pretty much over.
