Has anyone run across a plug in that decodes dbx encoding? For years (30 or so) we encoded our reel-to-reel masters with dbx, and it would be swell to just dump the raw tape into a computer, and use a plug in to decode them.
If that doesn't work out, I'm pretty sure I have an old dbx encoder/decoder somewhere in the garage. Might take me a while to find it, but as I recall it was about half the width of a usual piece of rack equipment.
I have several dbx LPs from the early 80s, but sold my dbx decoder long ago. I'd love to be able to decode them in software, and transfer the resulting files to cd. dbx lps gave us an early sample of what the coming digital revolution would sound like (quiet, man...very quiet).
If I recall correctly, there were at least two versions of dbx encoding and decoding. One was the consumer version and the other was a "Pro" version. They were not compatible, so if you look for a decoder, you may need to check very carefully. The system itself worked very well, but playing a tape through the wrong decoder produces some really weird effects.
Chuck is correct. DBX Type I was the pro version designed for 15ips reel, while Type II was the version for 7.5ips carts. Not sure if there was still a third version for those unique 3 3/4ips Compact Cassettes and ELCAsette. I can't imagine record pops being good on playback thru DBX! Iffy tape splices were bad enough.
If Rob is trying to decode his old WJDX masters from the old two-piece Tascam machine, that would be Type I.
