PMS, The Petros and Money Show

I've listened to Petros and Money for a while in LA. I'm glad they're national, as I like the show, but as i said in another thread, I don't think they'll do well. I don't have access to ratings and so forth, but it seems like they aren't even really trying to make the show more national. Here's a review of the show that has some other problems, but also why the show is a good listen:

Obviously, people from LA are free to respond, but I'm particularly interested in what people from other markets think of the show and how it's being recieved there.

we like them, therefore they are a great show. um, o.k.
judging by the picture of the writer, maybe he should have listened to his dad lecture him.
Anyone ever notice how people judge radio shows, if they like them, well that show is therefore 'smart'.
Shows that a writer does not enjoy, are then dubbed 'stupid' or worse, mainstream.
I have no doubt this is a fine show. Yet the claim that Rome, Cowherd and Mike and Mike are talentless and lucky and morons, who only cater to less intelligent people than..um Eric,,SORRY ERIC...tough to buy your reasoning.
I work with ESPN often, and very occasionally Rome. Met each. None, i assure you, are anything but sharp.
You don't get those jobs by luck. Nor do you keep them by chance. But keep convincing yourself of that.
If that makes you feel better.

Agreed. BTW: PMS is a good LA show (not that there's much competition there), but a GOD AWFUL national show.

Here's a review of the current state of FSR based on a station that is flipping to FSR soon.

I think you can be a smart or talented person, and put out a product for dumb people. Michael Bay films, eg. I'm sure the guy knows what he is doing, but the films are pap, at best. Similarly, I don't know any intelligent sports fan who believes that Mike and Mike provide thoughtful or useful analysis.

Why PMS refuse to even really attempt a national show is a mystery. The other day they did this big segment on USC spring ball. Before that they actually interviewed a basketball player from Fairfax HIGH SCHOOL. Maybe they know that a decision has already been made to do something else nationally in the long term. Even so, I don't know why they wouldn't at least make an effort to establish national popularity, like, say, Bill Plaschke.

It's obvious that PMS probably never wanted to become national at all. Not only just b/c of the USC and high schools stories, but they still make quite a few "AM570" drops. Not to mention their e-mail addys are still at KLAC's website. THAT'S a vote of confidence. IMHO, they likely feel it won't last, but it's through no fault of their own, so just try to keep the local audience from being totally lost. (Hard to do when their lead-in show was cannibalized as well.)

Still, they are leaps and bounds better than "Mike and Mike..." which has the nagging habit of boring me to tears. Imaging if PMS got the same platform that M&M have - a four-hour show that's essentially a "must-carry" for your affils, a full simulcast on TV, and marketing that would make you want to pee your pants. That would be a fair fight, no? (Which is just about impossible at the current time.)

Even still, they are leaps and bounds better than the late-night "Soup" filler in the overnight hours... which translates into 11p-3a in KLAC time. Riiiiiiiiight. Unlike the blog posting on WINZ/Miami, it was more than likely not the "brainchild" of Don Martin or anyone else... but a cost-cutting move that keeps the network lights on without having to air anything relevant. But you don't throw away four hours of network programming like that!

...and who would do that? ESPN Radio can because of the relationship with ESPN. Fox Sports Radio has nothing (other than a name) in relation to Fox Sports, I'm sure Fox would love to get rid of the branding, but can't because of the agreement with Clear Channel (and if they did, it would wave the white flag surrendering to ESPN atleast on the radio side of things).

Over 90% of Americans think of ESPN when it comes to sports, now with the economy the way it is, it's a tougher sell for #2 and everyone behind that.

And... if they pulled the agreement, what in the hell would you call the network... if Premiere decided to keep running it? The "AM570 Network?" Or a patchwork of syndicated programs (i.e., Rome, Patrick) that masqurades as a network?

I agree. Fox has to be embarrassed at the naming rights. The radio section of foxsports.com is all but buried on the site, and it is never cross-promoted on either FOX or the regional FS cable services. Would they want to start doing that NOW... with it being simply a nationalized version of KLAC? Not even.

Yep. For better or for worse, ESPN is so ingrained in the subconsicousness of the average American... that it has the survivablity of a Twinkie. Forget about TV... the radio network will never, ever go away. And FSR's and SNR's stubborn willingness to survive simply astounds me.

They'd probably call it the FSR Network or something along those lines where they turn it into a meaningless acronym. Remember that brief period when Premiere and Fox were in negotiations to keep the crossover branding going? The name "Fox Sports Radio" was removed from production for a while, shortening to FSR.

I've been hearing that Fox isn't so happy lately, particulary with the way people who were under contract with Fox were dumped by Premiere in the Clear Channel bloodletting.

I don't think Fox has ever been happy with the agreement, when you sign a deal with Clear Channel it's like signing a deal with the devil
