PocketRadio

One thing I do agree with you is the HD-FM coverage could be better. I think if they can improve the reception for it to go 100% of the analog coverage, I think HD-FM might just work. As far as AM, I do listen but not a big fan of AM-HD but it does sound good.

The truth about FM HD, and the reason we shouldn't even consider an analog shutoff, is that there are places where you can get analog but not digital. But anyone with an HD radio knows there are places where the digital signal is rock solid, but analog fm stereo is unlistenable. It actually cuts both ways. Analog and digital compliment each other, though I have no doubt that future radios will have improved reception. Men with pointy heads and slide rules (ok, thick glasses and computers) are working as we speak on making things better.

The main thing I am worried about is if they kill off analog radio, I may half to go with a paid service radio. I dont plan on ever paying for radio. Cell phones plan on killing off analog in 2008.

Well cell phones are a paid service. That's apples and oranges. You won't have to convert to a paid service. HD IS FREE, just as analog is free, after you buy a radio (you did pay for your analog radio, didn't you?)

Analog radio is going to be around for a long time.

As for Mike's statement about HD Radio receivers improving, take our country's DTV solution, for example. It was believed until three years ago that it was impossible to build a receiver to "fix" multipath reception issues with the 8VSB signal. Along came the "Fifth Generation" chips that found ways to do the impossible. I have one of these receivers. 40 miles from Chicago, I can aim a $4 bow tie in virtually any direction, indoors, and get the Chicago DTV stations. Flip to analog, and the antenna has to be aimed just right to eliminate ghosts.

Of course, comparing full-power dedicated DTV channels to underpowered, "alternate channel" IBOC reception isn't totally fair, but nevertheless, engineers will find ways to improve the HD Radio receivers of tomorrow.

Where is the HD "PocketRadio" promised on this thread?
HD is covering the analog AM and FM dials with interference and noise. I wonder how long analog or HD will survive the assault.

We're all doomed, DOOMED I tell you. I need to hook up an analog tuner to my 'puter, and record as I sweep through the sidebands of HD stations in my area, demonstrating how the sky ISN'T falling! It's just a little difficult to get motivated to hook up the gear in order to demonstrate what ISN'T there!

Yea, at a fraction of the price of HD radios - and, analog radios actually get decent reception, without the need for AM-loop and external FM-dipole antennas.

Ummm, all I was doing was agreeing with Pocketradio "the user name" there is nothing that said "pocket radios to come"

Putting the user name "POCKETRADIO" (appears as all caps on the main title page) on the subject line on this HD radio thread was confusing. I thought you were announcing availability of HD pocket radios. Sorry, pullitin.
