podcasting

One of my stations is podcasting most of our day now; we have some overpriced service that automatically posts every hour on our website. However, I'm thinking in this era of advanced technology, there must be a way to do this in-house, by storing the podcasts on a server hooked up to the internet and some software. Anyone know how to podcast a radio station 24/7 (in hour blocks) without much human involvement?

there are a few ways to automate the process, but... like with any automated process, you will eventually have an issue. plus, if you are thinking of having them reside on a local server, do you really want that much traffic going through your internet link?

the big question is... how unreasonable are they?

About $1500 a month plus the people we work with are idiots and take forever to fix problems they created.

What do you mean by traffic through the internet link? I guess rather than a local server, we could upload them automatically to a web server. I'm sure you could trade out for an unlimited space web hosting plan, but it can't cost more than $100 a month for a really good one even if you were paying, no?

wow... that is a bit unreasonable.

what i meant .... was if you have a t1... you might not run into a problem with traffic to your server, unless your podcasts get REALLY popular... but, if you are on cable... or dsl... people downloading your podcast might hog a ton of your bandwidth pretty quickly... making it very difficult to get anything in...or out.

what automation system are you using? they may offer an easy way to integrate it into your current setup.

Cybercorder... about $40 if memory serves me. You can set up a log to record every hour every day 7 days a week. It even does library maitenance by blowing out shows that are older than the date you set. We have it recording a line feed from the board all the time. Great for promos, or if a client requests copies of cut ins from a remote. You can record in a variety of formats and at the quality you choose. We have it set up to record 1 hour at a time and then save it. The program even timestamps the hour and the date in the title. A pretty good software package for very little. I belive BSI also makes a programable logger but it's like $400.

If you have the files on a local server, and you have FTP access to your website, you might want to check out a program called Fling from NCH software. It can automate uploading files from a selected directory to your webserver.

Check it out here.
