Podcasts of Syndicated shows...downgraded?

Since the mid-summer, I've noticed at least 2 shows that have fallen victim to lower bitrates and bad encoding. The Penn Gillette Show (really the only interesting thing on Free-FM that I found) and lately, The Lionel Show. What is the deal here? Are they thinking that the public will listen to good content no matter what the audio quality is like? Or, are the powers that be at Infinity/CBS and Buckley thinking that 'HD' radio will sound better by comparison after the podcasts are reduced from 128Kbps to 32 and 48Kbps respectively? And if you do that why not stick to the Fraunhofer standard to keep the shows from sounding like they were sired over by King Neptune?

Like cell phones, Big Radio has opted for the 'digital downgrade', rather than delivering quality sound!

One of my clients Podcasts a few shows...They got complaints when they posted shows at 128 or 64. It takes a good bit of time to download a one hour show even with broadband when they are encoded at that rate...I think they lowered the rate down to 32 or so...

128 is not totally golden, I agree. But again, it's the encoding. If people insist on using things like musicmatch to quick encode MP3s, then we have this issue. By the way, it takes a slightly longer amount of time to download the podcast. Takes me less than 30 seconds with broadband to download 30 MB/64kbps Mono. So I am wondering what the 'good bit of time' you're describing actually is.
 
My mp3s sound great at 32kbps, as I tweak the compression settings so it focuses on the human voice range. Give FTL a listen and let me know what you think. ;D
