POINT TROUBLE

What's going on at k-point? First Beaker Street leaves, then Trafford & Brown, then the chick doing afternoon bails. Last one out hit the lights!

Yeah, I'd like to be a fly on the wall to hear what's going on. I think they are easing towards a format change, I have no proof, it's just a theory. I sure miss Beaker Street though.

I know the Point has been playing Classic Rock for nearly 20 years, which is a long time to stay with the same format. You wonder if B-98, which has been AC since 1991 is also going to ease towards a format change? Could this be an active summer, as far as Little Rock radio goes?

KHLT K-Lite 94.1 became The Point in '94. So, yes, you're correct when you say it's been around almost 20 years now. It's also been quite successful over that time. It's still pretty successful though it's hard to see the big picture with Little Rock being a subscriber-only market, but I seem to remember K-Lite was pretty successful when it flipped, too. I'm thinking that format change caught a lot of people off guard.

That station's stale playlist and overprocessed audio doesn't help things either.

If I had to make an educated guess I would say they've backed the audio processing off a bit in the past couple of weeks. They are now not as loud as the CC stations but just a little louder than B98.5. There actually seems to be some dynamic range in the audio.

The play list on the other hand is still kind of stale but in all fairness, what classic rock station isn't stale.

With the stronghold that B98.5 has on the "soccermom" demo in Little Rock, I am highly doubtful that any changes will be made to that station. When you combine B and Alice, Citadel owns females. Too important of a demographic.

Mogul, the number of soccer moms must be declining, because B98's ratings have been declining over the past couple of years. I can remember when B98 was a consistent top 5 in the Arbitrons. Now, they're barely top 10, if that.

12+ doesn't tell the whole story. Sure... they may be out of the Top-5 and that is fine.. But go break down the ratings by demographic, or break it down by household income. All of the sudden, you can bet B98.5 is in the top five, or even top two! Advertisers don't just look at 12+ numbers. And advertisers want to reach women whether ratings are up or not. It doesn't matter to the shoe shop in the Heights that B98.5 has dropped some shares... they just know that is the one station above all the ladies listen to, and they know that Lisa Fischer's endorsement will carry weight. So sure, they are going to write the check! Local direct business is about a lot more than a few ratings points here and there... And if you are a GM or owner and have a lion's share of the listeners in a demographic, you aren't going to give that up.

Plus, since 1991, look at the number of stations Little Rock has now compared to what they had back then. Back in that day, the shares were not as broken up and the market wasn't as dilluted as it is now. Stations like 106.3 and 96.5 did not have the signal strength they do now.. 93.3, 102.1, 102.9, 102.5, 106.7, etc. were not even on the air in their current powers or capacities. So most of the heritage stations probably did have higher numbers than they do now.

B98.5 isn't going anywhere.

Well let's review what the new GM - Randy Bush - has done since arriving on the scene last fall -

Canceled Beaker Street - a top rated show - and replaced it with a voice tracked show of the same music played every other hour
Canned one of the top rated morning show teams in Central Arkansas that had been in place and successful for over 10 years
Moved a successful afternoon drive time show team to mornings - hey they are good in the afternoons, they'll be great in the morning ???
Canned a successful evening host - Dennis Allen
Hired an unknown to handle the afternoon drive time. Was she even live or voice tracked?
Trim the playlist to a library of about 700 songs. At the same time, issue a directive of "If it isn't in the library, it doesn't get played."

Now, does anyone wonder why things are going down hill at The Point? It ain't brain science or rocket surgery.
