Politician Wants WWOR-9's Licensed Revoked

What a waste of time. OF COURSE it doesn't serve only the Garden State, there is a huge population within its primary contour. Duh.

So he wants it to do only NJ news? NJ had that until they dumped the NJN network.

Good grief, TV is a business. Should WHTZ, WQXR, WBGO and all of the AM's that are licensed to NJ be revoked as well?

Well WWOR TV is required to serve New Jersey and they faced trouble at their last license renewal in 2007 for not doing so. They've been doing the bare minimum to meet their obligation with the nightly newscast since then but at least it was a straight newscast, not a partisan tabloid show. However Chasing NJ, which is replacing it, will undoubtedly be Rupert Murdoch's new PR outlet for Chris Christie 2016.

Just because its a business does not give it the right to ignore its licensing requirements. They are licensed to New Jersey, these rules about serving your city of license aren't new, so they should be held accountable.

That "serving your city of license" bit is so 1960. How about just counting that the region in general is served.

Yeah, 970 is really helping Hackensack. Even if they went "all Hackensack, all the time" one day a week it still wouldn't make any difference.

I contract for local stations that not only serve their community of license, but the surrounding ones as well.

The rule should be service to those in your protected contour.

You're on this board quite a bit... When do you find the time to "contract" Nick?

No one said it should serve "only " the Garden State. But it should be among those who are served.

I agree. And New Jersey is within the protected contour. Are they serving it sufficiently? (The Sunday show "New Jersey Now" counts in their favor.)

So I can't take 5 minutes to post something? If you're on here too, does that mean you can't also hold down a job?

My business is successful, I have many client stations.

Obviously you find time to criticize my company/employment/livelihood instead of disagree with my opinion.

What's your real name, sNEWSer? You obviously know mine. Want to come out in the open and say that again?

I also suppose by your logic, that this man http://www.engineeringradio.us/blog/ couldn't possibly do any work because he has a blog. A very informative and interesting one, especially to anyone in the technical end of radio, or wanting to learn about the technical side of the business.

Gotta go back to.... work now.

I wish we had more stations like WLNG which really do serve their community. I'm sure they don't have to air public affairs at 5 am on a Sunday morning because they do it all the time.

All we have left of public service is the required public affairs programming, which stations air at times nobody will listen, and some stations even put it only on their HD2.

WRNJ in NW NJ does a great job of serving the community (and surrounding ones as well). So does WGHT in Pompton Lakes, NJ.

WRNJ has lots of local talk/issues shows on. They also have political debates on air for various candidates in the local elections.

There are still a few like WLNG, WRNJ etc. out there, but they are becoming more and more rare.

Gotta stop typing now, because I can't possibly do this and continue to have client stations ;D

As a resident served by TV40 in Atlantic City, I have to say I'm surprised by the TV9 decision to drop local news. Even TV40 does what we all believe is a poor man's cheap version of local news, but they still do local news. I can understand the outrage. I guess the "serving the public interest" isn't what it used to be.

Anyone can go to NJ.com and get more local news than channel 9 could gather and present in an hour.

If there's a story in NJ, the other stations will have it on their news. Channel 9 news was always the "low rent" newscast in NYC anyway. If not enough people are watching it to make it profitable, then there's the answer to the question of "is it necessary?"

If nobody watches (which was the case with WWOR-TV's news product), is it really serving the public interest? What does "serving the public interest" mean anyway? As I understand it, running a few PSAs could be considered OK...
